Preface [Amazon Village 83AD]

Gabrielle, Bard-Queen of the Amazons, writes....

Having completed the first stage of their transition, David and Angela undertook the biggest challenge of them all: getting married. For most people, this is challenging. For these two, well...let's say it was almost impossible getting things lined up. However, they did pull it off as this scroll shows....

Chapter 1 [Tucson, AZ]

With the fall semester and the holidays safely behind them, Dave and Angie had one other big challenge awaiting them: their wedding. The days had flown by since the conference and now, the details loomed large in front of them.

One afternoon between Christmas and New Year's, they sat by the fireplace and in between sips of coffee, went over the details.

"Let's see, the church is reserved?" Angie asked.

"Brother Tony's still working on it," he replied.

"The bridal party's clothes?"

"Check."

"Limo?"

"Check."

"Okay, how about the reception?" she asked,

"There's the snag," he pointed out. "Every possible place near Amherst is full for some reason."

Her eyes grew wide. "We have to get something!"

"Hey, Kiddo, calm down. Cybelle and Karen are working with us too. Why don't we get back to our work? Something will pop up," he soothed.

She agreed and walked into her study where her research notes waited for her.

He put on a jacket and walked outside to look at the desert sunset with its kaleidoscope of colors. This scenery helped him to meditate, especially when times seemed bleakest. Why is everything locked down all of a sudden? I wish that a place would open up. Then he felt something warm in his pocket. Reaching in there, he found the red ruby he brought back from Nurrengaard. I forgot that I'd been looking at this thing. Why is it glowing?

Then, as if it could sense his thoughts and the earlier wish, the ruby released a red beam into the sky.

What the? he inquired in astonishment. Thinking that she was strung out enough, he decided not to mention this turn of events to Angie. Accordingly, he began the long trek back to the apartment. Walking in there, he smelled the aroma of chocolate pudding cooking. Mmm...she's been at work again. The lady sure knows how to read my mind.

As he walked in, she turned, "Oh, Honey! How was your walk?"

"Pretty good!" he shrugged. "Sunset in the desert always helps me to think. In fact, I was going to propose to you in Sedona Canyon."

"If not for the road construction, you might have done so," she recalled wryly.

"Sorry if my timing wasn't the best," he apologized.

She shook her head. "Honestly, since when have you ever done anything by the book? You swept me off my feet with your speech and then, your question. Maybe it wasn't the smoothest, but your proposal was very romantic." She gazed into his eyes and held hands with him as she continued, "I don't care if you had asked me in the middle of the mall area, I would have done it! So never ever be ashamed of how you asked me. The important thing is that you did so I could say yes! Now, come here, you big galoot!" She drew him into a long kiss. When they came up for air, she turned and slurred, "Your coffee and pudding await you, sir."

"Thank you, Miss," he giggled.

****

About an hour later, the phone rang. "Hello?" Angie answered.

"Hi, Angie. This is Cybelle. How's everything?"

"Okay, we're just going over details about the service and everything. How about on your end?"

The priestess sighed.

"That bad, huh?"

"I'm afraid so. Brother Tony called me to say they couldn't get the Church for that day. For some reason, everything's full. Do you have any ideas in Wabash maybe?"

"Nothing that could fit an entire group of well-wishers," she replied, thinking about the farmhouse and how small it really was. "The wedding party is set, right?"

"We are. Karen and I double-checked everything. We're all set except for not having a place to hold the actual service, that is," Cybelle pointed out. Then, she heard a whispering in her head. What in?

In the corner, she saw a glowing image of an elf maiden dressed in flowing robes. The Faerie Empress here? "Umm, Angie, I'll get back to you. I have another call to take," she concluded. Hanging up, she bowed to the image, "Lady, what is it?"

"Rise, Cybelle. It's all right. I'm here about your brother's ceremony," she revealed.

"Pardon me, but I wouldn't presume to ask you about that."

"No, however, David has unknowningly done so," the Empress indicated, a sly smile crossing her lips. "Everything is taken care of, Cybelle. They will be married in my realm. The 'reception' will occur in the Hall of Heroes in Nurrengaard. Grimwilkin attends to the final details even as I speak. When the dawn breaks the eastern desert mountains, he will journey to tell your brother and his companion himself."

"But to impose in this manner, Lady," Cybelle protested.

"Your brother is a hero twice decorated in the battle with the Dark. He has bested the sorcerer, Lousain, and taken damage on our behalf. The Inner Realms wish to do this as a token of gratitude, my Dear. Just be ready to talk with him in the morning," the visitor requested, vanishing into the darkness.

Dave, what have you done now?

****

[Tucson]

Angie hung the phone up with a puzzled look on her face. Who's there? Is she all right?

"Everything okay?" Dave asked her, reading that look.

"I guess. Cybelle had to hang up abruptly. That's not like her," she noted.

Unless duty were to call from the Other Side of the Mists. "We could always try to find a couple of friendly elves to help out," he joked.

"And we're going to let something take control of our wedding day? Nonsense! We've done this much! Remember everything we did last week?" she asserted.

"How could I forget?" he sighed. Over the previous two weeks, they had flown home briefly to set things up and try to get details set. They had dinner in practically every corner of Massachusetts and also in Wabash. All of the little things including dress fittings, tux rentals, and such. Karen and Cybelle were acting as "viceroys" looking into the food and the party. The former and Angie spoke for long amounts of time on the phone and by email. Frank and Dave were just as thorough. He cleared his throat and advised, "Remember though, this is our day and I love you."

"I know that," she worried. "Still, I wish we had things wrapped up."

"Patience, Princess," he assured her, kissing the top of her head. "I won't let you down on your day, trust me."

"I trust you, Sweetie," she giggled. "Now, can we cuddle and finish our coffee before it gets cold?"

He sat down next to her and unfolded the comforter over them both. "How's this?"

"Great, thanks! I can't wait until we're married and we can take full advantage of these moments! And I can see you with a ring on your finger too," she laughed warmly.

They sat on the couch and reminisced about the past and looked to the future, wondering what would happen next.

For some reason, he couldn't explain, however, he felt relaxed as if everything was being taken care of. Nonsense, Dave. We'll have to look into it in on Monday morning.

Chapter 3

Early the next morning, a gaunt elderly man appeared in the desert dressed in flowing brown robes and a pointed wizard's hat. His snow-white hair flowed to his shoulders and his beard hung to the middle of his chest. Leaning on his staff, he began to trudge into the apartment complex. This should be the place. Then again, I couldn't miss David's aura. There's only one man with that kind of dual nature going on there. Fifteen minutes later, he stood before Dave and Angie's apartment door, but saw the lights still out. Hmm, they must still be asleep. Well, that will soon change, he thought with amusement, rapping on the door with his staff.

Meantime, Angie stood in the kitchen, drinking a glass of orange juice when the rapping started. Who would it be at this hour? Looking through the peephole, she recognized the visitor, "Grimwilkin?" she asked groggily. "Oh gosh!" She opened the door and said, "Please excuse my appearance. We weren't expecting visitors this early." She curtseyed or did her best imitation of one at that hour. "Please take a seat. I get Dave up."

"Thank you," Grimwilkin replied as he took out his pipe and began to smoke it.

She opened her fiancé's door and walked over to the bed. Rubbing his shoulder, she called, "Dave? Wake up!"

He rolled over and groaned, "Angie...who could it be...at 5:30 on a Sunday...morning?"

"We have an important visitor," she noted.

"Yeah? That's nice," he murmured.

"Get up, Mr. Dubois!" Grimwilkin commanded from the other room.

Dave knew that voice. Aw man, not another troll problem. Shit. "I'm coming," he agreed, rising from the warm comfort of his bed and stretching.

"Go on and make him some tea. I'll get the coffee," she cracked.

He smiled and kissed her as he put his robe on and headed into the front room. He did a slight bow of the head, "Grimwilkin, my friend, it's good to see you."

"And you, my friend, as well," the wizard concurred. "What is that liquid that Angela is cooking in there? It has a delightful aroma."

"It's called 'coffee'. Would you like a cup?" Dave responded.

He shook his head. "I prefer my tea, thank you."

"Sure," the medievalist agreed, pouring water into the hotpot and plugging it in. "I just need a few minutes. So, what brings you here so early? Is there an emergency in the Inner Realms?"

"According to the Faerie Empress and the summons I received last night, the emergency is here. Did you not summon me?" the visitor asked. "Last night, we became aware of your problems with the joining ritual...what you here call the 'marriage ceremony'."

"No," she replied in confusion. "Dave, did you?"

He scratched his head. "Not that I...wait a minute!" He remembered the crystal's beam from the night before. "Is this ruby something?"

Grimwilkin examined it and nodded. "Indeed. The beam reached Nurrengaard last night. Even without it, the Faerie Empress has followed your lives closely and is aware of these things."

"Is she well, Grimwilkin?" Angie wondered.

"Oh yes," he smiled warmly. "In fact, she's talking with Cybelle about your wedding right now."

"What?" Dave asked.

The wizard chuckled and continued, "You need a place for the ceremony and the gala afterwards, do you not? You can have the ceremony in the faerie realm and the reception in the Hall of Heroes in Nurrengaard."

Angie ran her hands through her hair as she wondered, "Why would she talk to Cybelle and not just come here?"

"Don't ask, the Empress works in strange ways," Grimwilkin stated.

"I'm not. I was just wondering. Anyhow, wasn't the hall the place we ate after our ordeal? Please tell me it is," she inquired.

"The very same," Grimwilkin declared. "Imagine it splendidly decorated. All of the kings and knights of the Inner Realms will be there, of course. The best music, wine, and food is at your disposal, my friends. Molori extends his greetings and awaits your answer."

"Oh, Dave! Can we?" she begged, her eyes pleading with him.

He nodded vigorously and smiled. "Please give our thanks to him, Grimwilkin."

"I shall. Now about your clothes," he continued, waving his staff. Within seconds, they stood in their casual wear. "There, that's more suitable, I think. Oh, and when we get to our destination, Angela, the Lady has something for you there as well." Then, he teleported them away.

****

[Amherst, MA]

The trio materialized on Cybelle's doorstep just as she stepped out to get the newspaper.

Upon seeing them, she started, "What the? You're here already?"

"The Lady sent me to fetch them, Cybelle," Grimwilkin informed her. "Might we come in?"

"Certainly. We have some surprise company for you all actually. Randy dropped his daughter off to spend the day here. Miranda, honey? Look who's here!"

The toddler grinned when she recognized the threesome. "Grimmie, Unca, Auntie!" She toddled over to the wizard.

"Why, little Miranda, hello! And such a big welcome to warm an old man's bones!" the wizard exclaimed warmly, his eyes sparkling at the little girl.

"Hey, Miri-Ma," Dave grinned as he hugged his niece tightly and kissed her cheek. Fortunately, she's still cheery. Hopefully, the Pit didn't affect her too much.

"Unca, tell me story!" she requested.

"Maybe in a bit, Short Stuff," he advised. "The Aunties and I have to talk first. But, if you're really good, you can sit here with us, all right?"

She nodded and sat on his lap as they talked.

"We have a place," Dave indicated. "For the reception, we'll hold it in a place called Nurrengaard."

"And from what the Faerie Empress told me last night, her cathedral of crystal is open to us. But why would she do all of this?" the priestess wondered.

"That is because your brother is a twice renowned hero against the Dark. As such, his wedding is a grand event to the Inner Realms. Oh...yes, the package. Angela, we borrowed your wedding dress and made a few small improvements. Don't worry about paying for it either. It was the Lady's pleasure," Grimwilkin explained, his eyes shining.

He slid a long slender box toward her.

She opened it and her mouth dropped open. "My gosh!"

The white wedding dress had actually belonged to Angie's maternal great-grandmother from England. For it's time in the late 1920's, it had been a top of the line gown. She had always treasured this piece ever since her mother had shown it to her when she was a small girl. Into the fabric, expensive jewels and gems had been carefully sewn. A fine sapphire necklace and a golden tiara sat there as well. Finally, the veil was new-having been remade of the finest fabric. "I...don't know what to say...Grimwilkin, please thank the Lady for me. This is wonderful," she sniffled happily. Because of the budget, I would have been content with a simple wedding. Now, I can be married like a fairy princess. This is too much.

The wizard nodded. "That expression will be thanks enough for her, Angela."

The phone rang, interrupting the moment.

"Hello?" Cybelle answered.

"Hi, this is Karen Montoya. What's going on? Is everything all right?"

Her senses are almost as sharp as Dave's and mine. "Dave's here with Angie and Grimwilkin."

"Oh no! Not another evil sorcerer!"

"No, nothing like that. I'll let you talk to Dave. Hang on," the priestess advised, handing the phone to her brother. "It's Karen Montoya."

"Hi, Karen. How's the rug rat?" he asked.

"Great! She's sleeping right here. So what's the deal with you and Grimwilkin being there? Should we take out extra homeowner's insurance or what?" she giggled.

"There's no emergency. We found the locations for the wedding and reception. Apparently, the Faerie Empress has a place for the ceremony and Molori has donated his hall afterwards," he explained.

"I'll tell everyone to be ready for a great time even if they don't know where it'll be. We'll meet at APRHS and then, we can teleport from there?" she asked.

"Maybe some place a little more private. Well, here's Angie. See you soon! Best to Mike and the Squirt!" he concluded and handed the phone off again.

"Hi, Karen...you should see this dress! Goodness me!" the doctor exclaimed bashfully.

Knowing the Faerie Empress, it'll be something to behold on her. "If the Empress gave it to you, it's something special. How's everything?"

"Okay. We're finishing everything up before the trip. Otherwise, just the research for our presentations," Angie noted.

"I'll let you get back to it. See you soon," Karen concluded and hung up.

"Bye," Angie cheered as she did the same in Amherst. "Well, we had best be getting back to Arizona."

"Are you both sure that everything's set back here?" Grimwilkin wondered.

Seeing them nod, Cybelle added, "Yes! With what was so graciously offered just now, we're all set. Angie, I can keep the dress here."

"Okay. I'll be looking forward to putting it on," Angie agreed. Then she looked at her niece, "Bye, Miranda."

"Bye, Auntie! Unca!" Miri blurted out.

"Bye, Miri-Ma. We'll see you in a bit," he assured her, kissing her chubby cheeks.

After that, Grimwilkin conjured another teleportation spell, taking them back into the mists again.

This is going to be some party, Cybelle mused to herself. They'll never forget this one.

Chapter 4

Despite the work lying before them, the last two weeks before the wedding dragged by.

Dave taught three classes and organized the History department's book orders. Not surprisingly, his thoughts focused on the Big Event.

Angie continued on her rounds and made progress on her projects.

Of course, they drank lots of coffee and worked hard to get everything done for their bosses.

****

Finally, the departure day arrived and their respective duty schedules remained light. In their offices, they watched the clock tick by in inexorably slow fashion.

About 2:30, Steve Petersen walked into the UMC dressed in his FBI outfit. Let's see, Karen said she would be on the fifth floor. Getting off the elevator, he walked up to Lori's desk.

"Can I help you, sir?" she asked.

He produced his badge and ID. "FBI agent to see Dr. Blackwell."

She eyed him strangely. What's the FBI doing here? She called the appropriate number and asked, "Dr. Blackwell, there's a FBI agent to see you."

"FBI?" Now what? "Send him down," she sighed. I'll deal with this quickly. No sense in holding us up.

A minute later, a knocking came from the door. "Dr. Blackwell?"

She turned at the sound of the voice. No. That weasel! She began laughing, "Agent Petersen, I presume? Get in here! You scared the receptionist and me half to death!"

He smirked. "It's what I'm trained to do, Angie. Frank, Karen, Rick, and I have a pact: nothing happens to you. Period. Besides, a little protection never hurts."

"I'm sure you're right," she realized. "Well, I have a little more work to do and...gosh! I didn't realize it was so late." She powered down her computer and picked up her satchel. Fortunately, everything's ready for the conference. "Let's go and meet Dave!" After pulling on her coat, she locked the door and led him downstairs.

Dr. Fishburne stood by the door waiting for them. "I just wanted to wish you well, Angela. Before you go, I was wondering if you could help us over at the Union?"

"The Union? Oh well, sure. Steve, do you mind?" she agreed.

"Not at all. Let's go," the agent agreed, following her out the door toward the parking lot.

****

Dave's workday had fifteen minutes left in it when Rita stuck her head into his office.

"Rita, what's up? I'm just getting everything packed up for the trip," he advised, putting some handouts and his notes into the duffel bag.

"You've got those butterflies, huh?" she inquired.

"King sized monarchs," he admitted.

"I'm sure they'll pass. Hey, I was wondering if you could check on a presentation for us over at the Union. I'm giving it later, but I would appreciate you looking over the slides first," she requested. "Angie's still working on something over at the UMC so you have time."

"Well, all right. It's on the way. Let's go," he agreed, powering down the system and grabbing his stuff. Locking the door, he led her down the stairs and out the front door. As they walked, a sudden burst of memories came across his consciousness-usually signifying that someone was making his presence felt.

This stinks.

What does?

Ya'll are bein' set up, Bro.

You're too cynical.

Ah'm the smart one.

Define smart.

Awright, it's yer funeral. With that, the Voice went silent.

As they entered the Union, she directed, "Darn it! I forgot the camera! Dave, go up to the Faculty Club. The equipment's in there. I'll be right back." She rushed off.

Ah still say ya'll are bein' set up, the Child chimed in.

Although he would never admit it, the librarian was beginning to think his dark persona had a point. That fact was confirmed by the fact that the room was pitch dark. Now what? The door slammed shut behind him.

We've got company, Bro. Told ya this was a setup! Little Woman, off to the left.

"Angie?" Dave called.

"Dave? Is that you?" her voice called.

He swept the area with his senses and felt her in front of him. "Stand still, Princess." He bumped into her. "I'm here."

"What is this?" she wondered, feeling very nervous.

He growled, allowing the Child to bob close to the surface. "All right. I know you all are here! Either the lights come on or we leave."

"Man!" Steve's voice complained, flicking the switch. I hate it when he does that.

The others jumped up and yelled, "SURPRISE!!!"

Angie jumped right into Dave's arms and buried her face in his chest.

He looked at Steve who was shaking his head. "You know I'm going to have to get even with you for that."

"I'm sure," the agent scoffed, shaking his head. "Anyhow, when your profs and co-workers wanted to throw this party for you, I was only too happy to help out."

Dave looked around to see everyone from his undergraduate and library school classes there, waiting to wish him well. After a while, they chilled out, assured that their former student wasn't going to explode on them and started having fun.

For Angie, her present co-workers were there as well. They mixed and made small talk for quite a while. As she felt more comfortable, they found out more about her than they had in the previous four months.

Steve enjoyed the party, talking with the others and keeping an eye on the clock. As it struck 4:30, he notified the two guests of honor that it was time.

"Thank you!" Angie cheered, waving.

"Thanks, guys!" Dave added, following her and Steve out of the room. Grabbing their satchels, the duo and their bodyguard rushed to the adjacent parking garage and sped home. Once there, they had only to grab their pre-packed suitcases and change into casual stuff.

They came out in their respective teams' things.

"You're kidding," she laughed.

"No, I would say you were," Dave teased back.

"You both can't be playing at home," Steve cracked.

"From now on, we are," the librarian asserted, kissing Angie on the cheek. "Let's go. I never thought I'd be glad to head east, but let's split!"

Steve climbed in the driver's side as Dave put the bags in the trunk and shut the door. "All set."

Getting in the back with Angie, he advised his friend, "Let's rip."

"Yes, sir!" he chuckled, turning left and heading down Sixth Street toward the I-10 interchange. On the way up the ramp, he urged, "Get comfortable and hold on."

Angie grinned. Classic role reversal. I love it. "Punch it!"

"Right!" Steve agreed, hitting the gas and zipping northward.

About two hours later, they pulled into the parking garage for the rental car company. After Steve checked the car back in, they took the shuttle over to the main terminal. There, after checking in and going through security, the trio found their gate.

"Okay, relax, guys," the agent advised. "I'll be right back." He walked up to the gate desk and started talking about something with them.

"What do you suppose that's about?" Angie wondered.

"Well, you think we should play along this time since we spoiled the last surprise?" Dave inquired with a bit of humor.

"That was you, Chief. Although, I'm grateful that you did that. Thanks for being there for me," she told him.

"Any time, Princess," he assured her.

Just then, they started boarding the flight. The three friends found their seats quickly and settled in for the long trip.

As the plane took off, Angie stated, "Here we go!"

"For the better," Dave promised,

Amen, Steve concurred from his seat.

"I still can't believe it," she doubted.

"Believe it," he told her, holding her hand and allowing his eyes to shine into hers.

****

About forty-five minutes later, the flight attendant came by their seats with the meal truck. "Excuse me, are you David Dubois and Angela Blackwell?"

"We are," Dave replied. Glancing over at Steve, he saw his former classmate's face twisting into a grin. "What is this, Steve?"

"Just an early wedding present," the agent chuckled. "Enjoy."

The rest of the coach section drooled as the couple ate their steak, potatoes, peas and wine.

"Thank you, Steve," his friends cheered as they savored the fabulous fare.

"You're welcome," the agent told them as he enjoyed his own feast. Dig in, guys. You deserve it.

For the rest of the trip, the couple looked out the window, enjoying the view of the dark night, the moon, stars beside them; the clouds beneath them. They didn't talk much, preferring to savor the view and each other's company.

As with all good things, they finally descended toward Boston and the next stage of their journey.

Chapter 5

Rick and Samantha waited anxiously in the terminal for all of the parties to arrive. Besides the trio coming from Arizona, the Montoyas were due there as well.

"I hope everything is okay," he worried.

"So everyone's a little late," she assured him. "Imagine how Dave's feeling up there. He must be going bonkers up there."

"Yeah, I guess. Hey, remember that girl from the dorm, Martie? She did this to him too."

She winced. "I couldn't forget that one if I tried. We were convinced that she had stood him up. At least, he doesn't have to worry about that anymore."

Just then, a voice boomed, "Hey, guys!"

Turning, they saw Mike and Karen approaching them.

"Where's Mika?" Samantha wondered.

"She's with my sister," Mike explained.

"How was the trip?" Rick asked.

"Very good. Mike snored all the way," Karen giggled.

He smiled and shook his head. "See what Dave missed out on?"

His wife elbowed him in the side, clearly indicating that he was out of bounds with that one.

Samantha glanced to the adjacent gate and grinned.

"What?" Mike asked.

"Look."

They saw Dave walking into the room with Angie-his arm wrapped around her shoulders. Then they stopped and kissed.

"You were saying, Mike?" Karen snickered. However, she was clearly enjoying the moment. For so long, they were unhappy. Good for you both!

"Hey, guys!" Steve greeted the others while walking over with his carry-ons. "It's been fun, let me tell you."

"I'll bet," Rick agreed. "Are they set?"

"We need to go to baggage claim," the agent informed them.

"We do too," Karen added. "Hey, you two! Let's go!"

"Sorry," Angie apologized, blushing. "We're caught up in the moment."

"Whatever," Dave disagreed. "Let them deal with it. Hey, Karen, how was your flight?"

"Never better," she agreed, hugging them both. "And I take it your flight was a good one."

"We enjoyed it. It's been quite the afternoon. Ask Petersen," the librarian smirked.

"What happened?" the nurse wondered, looking at the agent.

"Hey. Don't look at me! Their co-workers wanted to throw a surprise party and it would have worked except for our gifted guy here," Steve explained.

"You're lucky You-Know-Who didn't come out in that dark room, Steve," Angie sighed, trying not to think about what might have happened. "You had me scared stiff."

They had them locked in a dark room with people lurking there? Worse, with Angie scared? You're all lucky he didn't explode and take you all out not to mention the Union. "You got off lucky, Steve. Still, Dave's being Dave-way too overprotective."

"Yes, yes, yes," the librarian sighed. "So, how is everyone tonight?"

"Great," Rick replied. "Of course, we still need to get you to the big event."

"No problem. Bessie'll get us there all right."

"Bessie?" Angie and Mike asked.

Rick and Karen started laughing. "Bessie is what he calls the Subaru."

"And what's the matter with that?" Dave protested.

"Oh nothing. I realize that you were bumming after we broke up, but to name the car? Geez!" Karen teased. "Seriously, Bessie should know her way between Scituate and Amherst by now, I'd imagine."

"Oh you guys are so droll," Dave retorted, managing to keep some humor.

Angie shook her head and interjected, "Okay, everyone. So he's a stubborn butthead with a few quirks, but he's a loveable stubborn butthead, and after Saturday, you're my stubborn butthead." She kissed him quickly.

"Whatever, guys," Dave cracked. "Let's get to baggage claim. Rick?"

Guessing at his intent, his former classmate took the keys out of his pocket and flipped them to him. "I drove her up here. She's hot, heavy and waiting for you."

As they entered the claim area, that remark brought more cracks.

"Be careful, Rick. You may be hitchhiking tonight, Bud," Dave jabbed mock seriously. Taking his and Angie's bags off the belt, he urged, "Let's get going. It's been a long day. Samantha, you take the lead and we'll follow. Karen and Mike, you're with us. Steve, I figure you and the Comedian can ride with her."

"Sounds good," she agreed. "Come on, Steve and you too, Comedian. And, Rick?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't quit your day job," she jabbed.

He scowled at her and at the librarian. Shot down again. Grrr....

****

The Subaru and Samantha's Sentra made quick work of the trip to the Alvarez home.

After Ray and Samantha drove off, the others entered the house. On the table, they found a note detailing the sleeping arrangements.

"Okay," Karen stated. "Mike and I are in my old room. Angie's in the guest room. Dave, you and Steve are in your old room."

"Sounds simple enough," Dave yawned.

"Yes. Well, shall we?" the doctor wondered.

With that, they all started for their rooms. As they did, Dave and Angie snuck in one more kiss before retreating to their areas for the night much to the amusement of the Peanut Gallery.

"Night, Sweetie," she laughed.

"Night, Angel," he replied.

"Umm, guys, if you keep this up, it'll be good morning soon," Mike kidded.

"Mike," his wife hissed low.

"He's jealous," Angie cracked,

"Well so's Dave, so there," he fired back.

Feeling the familiar consternation rising inside of him, the librarian growled, "Jealous of what? You? Oh, please!"

The other man felt insulted as well. "Yeah, well. Some people, you know."

Angie glared at him. "Meaning what?"

"Drop it, Montoya," he growled. "I won't let you talk like this about any of us. Joke or not, it...ain't...funny."

Steve jumped in. This conversation's getting a little too warm for my liking.

"Our room. Now!" Karen ordered, dragging her husband in with her and closing the door firmly.

When they left, Dave quaked a bit, but forced himself to keep control. I won't loose it here. I won't do it. "Angie, are you okay?"

She sighed. "Is that how everyone looks at us, Dave?"

"What, you know better than to listen to that knucklehead," he assured her. "Karen's my friend, but you're going to be my wife, all right?"

At that moment, Mr. Alvarez came down the hall. "Dave, do you know what time it is?"

"Sorry, sir," Angie apologized, her mood ruined. "We're going to bed right now. See you all in the morning." With that, she walked into her room and shut the door.

Karen's father looked at his former boarder and could read the anger brewing there. Mike must have stirred him up tonight. At least, he didn't blow. Tomorrow, I'll talk to Karen about this mess. "I'm heading back to bed, then."

"Come on, Steve," Dave declared, leading his friend into the bedroom and closing the door. There, an air mattress sat beside the old bed. "Mind the mattress?"

"No. I've slept on harder," he remarked, getting in under his sheets. "See you in the morning."

"Right," the librarian agreed, turning out the lights and falling to sleep at last.

Chapter 6 [Next Morning]

After the events of that night, the group slept in fairly late. Between the flight and the near-argument, they were all drained and needed space from each other.

About 9:30, Frank and Jolene Landers pulled into the Alvarezes' driveway. Given the length of their drive, they had wanted to beat the commuter traffic out of New York and avoid the New Haven and Providence rush hours. Having accomplished the first two and skirting the third, they felt the trip was a good one.

"We made great time," he pointed out.

"I told you we would," she shot back. "We're still a bit early, Frank. They still sleeping in there, I imagine."

"Yes, Dear," he concurred reluctantly. "Shall we?"

"We might as well," she agreed. They walked up to the door and knocked.

Charles opened it and greeted, "Frank, Jolene, how's it going?"

"Great! And you?" the doctor replied.

"Dazed. We're getting ready for the Big Event. Everyone got in late last night. They're still asleep upstairs," Charles indicated.

"Not everyone," Steve yawned, coming down the stairs. "Good morning, Frank, Jolene."

"Hey," Frank responded. "How was the trip from Frisco?"

The agent glanced at Charles and sighed.

"Okay, now what?" the doctor demanded. "Dave didn't blow up, did he?"

"Close but not quite...on two occasions. First, the folks at the U of A almost tripped his switch yesterday over their surprise party. Then, the conversation here got a little too close to the vest last night."

Charles winced. "Dad's pretty ticked off by that stuff. Mike still feels that Dave's a threat to him."

Frank shook his head. "Unbelievable. Will he just leave Dave and Angie alone? They're getting married. That's the end of it. Whatever we thought Dave and Karen would have didn't work out. I hope he backs off."

"Karen and I stopped it. Dave also made it clear that he won't take it," Steve stated.

"Won't take what?" the librarian asked while coming down the stairs. "Hey, guys, good to see you!" He embraced the two newcomers. "How's Jerry?"

"He's with my parents this weekend," Jolene noted pleasantly. At least he's in a better mood this morning.

"I was just going to make some coffee. Want some?" Dave offered, taking out a bag of his Bavarian Chocolate Cherry. Seeing them all nod, he ground the beans and started the filter. "This will get them all up."

"You're evil and twisted!" Caroline lectured with a smile from the door behind them.

"And proud of it," he cracked. "I take it you want some too?"

"What do you think?" she giggled. "Your coffee taste is an event around here, let me tell you."

As the coffee finished, he poured cups for them all and restarted the machine. "Baiting the trap," he snickered. "I say eight more minutes."

Caroline and Charles stared at each other. He is evil, all right.

About seven minutes and 45 seconds later, Karen and Angie stumbled into the room groggily.

"We followed the aroma," Karen whispered. "Where is it?"

"Where's what?" Dave asked flippantly.

"You know what, Dummy," Angie groaned. "Give up the goods."

Her fiancé broke out laughing. "Oh, so this is what I'm getting myself into, huh?"

"Coming between a half-asleep woman and her coffee isn't a joking matter, Buster," the oncologist stated half-seriously.

"Check the cups out on the counter. The left one's Karen's. Oh, Angie? Before you get yours, you have to pay a toll first," he teased.

She stared at Karen first and then, at him. "And what would that be?" she laughed and kissed him. "There, now can I have my coffee?"

"Yes, Dear." He snickered. "Straight ahead of you."

She shook her head as she sipped on the cherry concoction. "That's better. Thanks."

"You're welcome," he responded, opening the Globe's Sports' page. "Both our teams won last night although there's no write up."

"You want them to cover Arizona stuff back here? Demanding, aren't you?" Angie inquired with a touch of humor.

"Hey, it's important to us. That assures there's peace in the house at least for now," he bantered back.

"I guess. By the way, what's on tap for today? I wanted to go into Boston and do Harvard Square," Angie suggested.

"You really want to start off with a big credit card debt, don't you?" Karen snickered. "You haven't seen Dave in that bookstore. I have."

"I think I can control myself," the librarian countered, arching his eyebrow.

"I trust you," Angie concurred.

"You don't know what you're getting yourself into," Karen cracked.

"Let Dave have his fun," Angie stated firmly. "Let's get going."

****

That afternoon, the group toured Boston, taking in the sites and enjoying themselves. As promised, they took the Red Line up to Cambridge and walked around Harvard.

Dave did get into his favorite bookstore up there, but managed to keep the damage under control...well somewhat. Fortunately, the U of A faculty had given him a gift certificate so that helped. After forty-five minutes, he came out of there with a few things and not much poorer-all things considered.

After a return ride to Boston, they went to dinner at the Seaside Palace right on the harbor. After savoring the fresh seafood and good company, they relaxed; content to be in such good company.

Dave announced, "Well, since nobody has any surprises, I have one for Angie." He produced a wrapped package. "For you."

"What's this?" she wondered, accepting it. Inside, she found the newest text in her field. "This isn't even supposed to be published yet! How did you get this?"

"My contacts in the field helped," he stated. "So do you like it?"

"Like it? I love it! Thanks!" she cheered, kissing him.

"Look inside the cover," he hinted.

She opened it to find this inscription:

Dear Angie:

I hope that this book is as much of a standard to your work as you are to my life. Please accept it with my love and remember-it's not a Merck Manual or a notebook, so don't go leaving it at McDonald's!

Tuum amo

David

Angie cried and started laughing, "You creep! I won't be that dumb again!"

"What did he write?" Karen wondered. This is going to be good.

"Look at this," Angie chuckled.

The nurse smiled. "That's appropriate and actually pretty funny."

"I don't want some strange guy trying to pick her up," Dave protested humorously.

"I don't know of anyone stranger than you, Dave," Angie cracked, rubbing his shoulder.

"Leave it to a librarian to use a book to get a girl's heart," Steve teased.

The group broke out laughing and the merriment lasted well into the night.

Chapter 7

About 1:00 on the next day, the group sat around the Alvarezes' dining room table planning their next move and enjoying some of Mrs. Alvarez's sandwiches.

"What's next?" Frank inquired.

"If I read Dave right, we'll need to leave soon. We need to make a stop in New Bedford before heading up to Amherst. Once there, we have a stop to make before we hit the church," Angie indicated.

"Stopping to see Gram?" Steve asked. "Yeah, you'd better leave soon so that you'll have plenty of time. You know she's going to be there no matter what."

"I know," Dave agreed. Nothing would keep her or Grandpa Alvaro from there. "Frank, can you handle everything else here?"

"Rick and Samantha will be here within the hour," Karen indicated. "We'll meet you three at Bart's and go from there."

Her mother stuck her head into the room and interjected, "We'll be up there as soon as Mr. Alvarez gets here. See you at your sister's!"

Dave nodded. "Let's go, Princess." Getting up, he helped Angie to her feet. "See you all there."

"Why thank you," Angie expressed. "See you all there!"

"Remember, no eloping on us now!" Frank joked.

"Pipe down in there!" Dave cracked as he walked through the door.

Joining Angie in the Subaru, he put his seatbelt on and gripped the wheel. "Here we go, Bessie," he told the machine as he started it.

He's something else. "Are you through or are we going to get going?" Angie teased.

"Give me a minute," he replied, pulling out of the driveway. "And here we go." Heading toward the highway, he turned onto the on ramp.

"Punch it!" she giggled.

He grinned and sped up, heading toward New Bedford. After meeting Lydia in front of her parents' house, they headed northwest up I-195, meeting up with the Mass Pike. One exit down, he turned onto Route 32, heading through Palmer and west into the countryside.

"When's everyone joining us?" Lydia asked.

"About 4:30 in Amherst center," Angie replied.

Lydia checked her watch. "We're only about...twenty minutes from there now. We're going to be an hour early. Are you going to see your grandmother, Dave?"

"That's right. I hope you don't mind. I just felt it right to share our day with her and my grandfather as well," he revealed.

"They know, Dave. And they want us to enjoy ourselves now and for the rest of our lives," Angie assured him.

Just then, they came into Amherst center. "Here we are!" Dave announced. Taking a right, he drove up North Pleasant Street and over to the small cemetery.

"You two take your time," Lydia told them. "I'll wait here. Just leave the heat on, all right?"

"Sure," he agreed. "Princess, shall we?"

"We shall," she concurred, heading to the small tombstones for his grandparents.

He dusted them off and checked the plants by them. Mom and Dad have been here at least. He chuckled, recalling the fuss over combining the Alvaro and Dubois plots some years before. Dad, you know how to stir up a ruckus, don't you?

Ah'll say, the Child concurred. Don't think 'bout 'im, Bro. Gram an' Grandpa wouldn't want that.

Right, Dave replied, taking a deep breath. "Well, it's finally here. I'm taking the big plunge and I can't think of a better person to do it with." Giving Angie a hug, he continued, "I just wanted to thank you both for everything. This story finally does have a happy ending, doesn't it? If you get the chance to stop by the service, please do so. Take care and wish me luck."

"Is it okay if I say a few words too?" she requested.

"Sure. I'll wait by the car with Lydia," he agreed and left her alone.

She took a deep breath. Here goes. I hope I do okay with this. "Hi, Mrs. Dubois and Mr. Alvaro. It's me, Angie. I wanted to thank you again for having such a great grandson. Dave's such a wonderful person. I can't believe how lucky I am! Don't worry, he won't be hurting anymore. He's got a great job, lots of friends, hopefully kids...some day, and ...well...me. I promise to do my best for him and what Dave said goes for me too. Please feel free to share our day with us. Well, he's waiting for me so I'd best go." Her eyes watered as she told them, "It's too bad I never met you both. I would have liked that." With that, she turned and headed back to where Dave stood.

"How did it go?" he asked.

"Oh, you know me...overemotional as usual," she sniffled.

He smiled warmly and hugged her. "It's okay. I love that about you."

"I know that. Let's not keep Lydia waiting, all right?" she sighed, managing a grin. "Besides, they would want us to be happy. Come on."

As they got in the car, their passenger asked, "Everything set?"

"Now, we are," he replied, giving Angie's hand a squeeze. "Let's take a drive."

Turning out of the cemetery, he took them to show off all of the old haunts around town. Finally, they pulled into the ice cream shop/bakery and parked there,

"Nice town, Dave. I can see why you enjoyed it," Lydia complimented.

"It is that," Angie agreed.

"Thanks, ladies," he accepted.

Then Mike's and Ray's vehicles pulled in beside them.

"You all made good time!" Angie expressed.

"We did," Karen replied. Looking into the back, she asked, "Dr. Coltrane, is that you?"

"It is. Karen Alvarez, right?" the professor responded.

"It's Karen Montoya now. This is my husband, Mike," the nurse introduced.

"Let's see," Dave continued as the others got out of the cars. "In order, Frank Landers, my best man and his wife, Jolene, Rick, and Steve Petersen are the ushers."

Angie picked up from there. "Samantha's one of my bridesmaids and Karen's the matron of honor."

"And I'm the other bridesmaid, Cybelle Rogers," Cybelle introduced herself as she and her husband approached. "This is my husband, Mike."

"Dr. Lydia Coltrane, pleased to meet you, Cybelle," Lydia responded, shaking her hand.

"When do we have to be back at the house?" the priestess wondered.

"4:30 or thereabouts," Dave sighed.

Steve studied his expression and asked, "Those butterflies are getting bigger, aren't they?"

"They are," the librarian admitted.

"Look, Dave, you're going to do great tomorrow. Just think beyond the ceremony and how happy you'll be with Angie. Best of all, you'll never be lonely again," Lydia advised.

Glancing at his watch, Dave noticed it was coming up for 4:15. "Shall we?"

"I guess we should," Karen concurred. "We're getting close."

Getting into their cars, the group followed the Rogers' vehicle down the street and up to their house.

Once there, the group noticed that the Alvarezes, some Duboises, Angie's parents were already waiting for them at the house.

As the group walked in, they exchanged greetings with everyone else.

"Angela, welcome! I see you're looking well," Brother Tony expressed, kissing her on the cheek.

"A little jittery, but otherwise all right," she told her.

"And, David. Good to see you as well," he said warmly.

"All right. And you?" the librarian asked.

"Oh, as well as an old man can feel. Are you all ready?" the minister queried. I don't understand what's going on here, but if its what I think it is, then we can still have a workable ceremony. "Places, everyone, if you would?"

As she moved into position, Cybelle still felt concerned. Of all the ministers, Tony is the most open to the Old Ways. Still, how will he react tomorrow?

The group ran through their rehearsal several times. With each pass, they worked out little kinks and mistakes. At first, these errors created nervous feelings for everyone. However, these tensions eased as the session progressed.

Finally, at 6:30, Brother Tony put his hands up. "That's fine, everyone! I think we're ready for tomorrow."

"Whew," Dave expressed. "Okay, shall we go to dinner then?"

"Indeed," Mr. Alvarez concurred, "The Yankee Peddler's the place. Do you all know where that is?" Seeing everyone nod, he turned to Dave's mother, Sarah, and asked, "Do you want to ride with us?"

"I'd love to, but I need to help my mother. Thanks for the invitation," Sarah expressed, putting her coat on and helping her elderly companion to do the same. "We'll see you there."

"All right," Steve indicated. "Into the cars and let's get some good food."

The others, exhausted, but in a good way from the practicing, piled into their vehicles. Once everyone was set, they headed south down Route 116 through Amherst, South Hadley, and into Holyoke.

****

The dinner was a splendid affair. Everyone received their choice of chicken or beef as well as their drink of choice. For two hours, the group sat at the long banquet table eating, drinking and enjoying themselves.

Finally, Mr. Blackwell stood up and clinked his glass with a spoon. "Attention, everyone! I have a toast to make! To my daughter, Angie, a good hard working young woman, and to David, an equally hard worker and a truly special young man. Kids, make each other happy and delight the rest of us with your efforts in doing so."

"Hear! Hear!" the group chorused.

Angie rubbed up against Dave and gave a contented sigh.

He just smiled. There can't be anything better than this.

****

As the party prepared to the end, Dave stood up and announced, "Okay, guys, just a reminder. Dress in layers tomorrow. There's going to be a little heat wave." They have no idea. I trust the Empress to have everything in order.

Except for his "Inner Circle", the others stared at him. Who had ever heard of a heat wave in January, especially when the forecast called for a cold front the very next day?

Angie smiled, imagining the scene that they would encounter. It's going to be awesome indeed.

Miri giggled in her high chair, thinking of the 'glowing lady' and her magic.

Mr. Blackwell cleared his throat. "Well, everyone-it's getting late and we need to see my Angel home one last time."

"You're going back to my house. I trust you can keep from raising too much Cain there tonight?" Cybelle indicated.

"I think we can keep him under control," her husband replied.

"Yeah well, I'm having too much fun at the moment otherwise," the librarian assured her. "Anyhow, Rick, Frank, Steve, I was planning to hit the baseball field with Charles to work out some kinks. Garth's going to meet us there too."

"Bring your slider, Dave," Charles urged.

Before they left, Dave walked back over to Angie. "Good night, Angie."

"And good night to you too," she concurred, kissing him. "Until tomorrow."

He nodded and watched her leave with her parents, Karen, Mike, and Samantha. This night's going to drag.

Ah'd say enjoy it, the Child urged. Last gasp of freedom.

You'd say that.

An observation, Knucklehead. Just leave the broodin' behind.

He's right, Dave agreed to himself as he and the other guys piled into the Subaru and returned to Cybelle's for the evening.

Chapter 8

About forty-five minutes later, the Blackwells' station wagon pulled into the driveway of Angie's aunt, Paula Wilcox. Following that, Mr. Blackwell honked the horn once.

At that sound, the lights snapped on and a slender elderly woman with a kind demeanor and a warm smile came out to greet them. "Hi, everyone! Come inside! Bill, how are you? Jenny, you're looking well! And there she is-the bride to be! Angie, you're looking marvelous!"

"Thanks, Auntie," Angie replied bashfully. "These are my friends. Karen Montoya, my matron of honor, her husband, Mike in addition to my two bridesmaids-Cybelle Rogers and Samantha Cooper. This other lady is Dr. Lydia Coltrane, one of my colleagues from Tucson and one of Dave's former professors. Finally, the brunette here is Mrs. Jolene Landers."

Everyone shook hands and followed their hostess into the house. After they were settled into the guest rooms, Karen announced, "Meeting in Angie's room in ten minutes!"

"Oh brother! Here it comes!" the bride to be laughed.

"Just get in there!" Cybelle urged. If I'm going to play this role, I might as well go all the way with it. "Honestly, for a big sister, you're such a worrywart. Perfect for Dave."

Mike walked over to Karen and told her. "I'm going to stay on the couch downstairs so you girls can have fun, all right?"

"That's fine. Why don't you go over to the house and be with the guys?" Cybelle asked.

Karen shook her head. That's the last thing we need tonight. Poor Mike. He doesn't want to antagonize Dave. Mr. Blackwell's still pretty miffed with him. And he doesn't want to intrude with us. "Umm, well...can you give me about an hour? Sorry."

"That's fine," he agreed. "I don't want to ruin the party."

Angie shook her head. For once, he's trying to be considerate. "That's okay. Listen, why don't you go talk with my aunt for a while? Maybe she can break the ice between you and Daddy." Yeah, just like the Titanic did. C'mon, Angie, cut him some slack.

He nodded and went downstairs.

Once the door closed, Cybelle urged, "All right, let's talk."

Angie smirked. "Cybelle, I never had you figured for a wild party."

She ought to see Beltane. "No. I just wanted to share some sentiments is all."

Karen grinned and held a cardboard paper towel holder in her hand like a microphone. "So tell us, Angie, you're about to get married. What are you thinking?"

The oncologist blushed.

"C'mon, Angie," Samantha laughed. "America's waiting."

Angie relaxed and smiled wistfully. "I feel as if I just won the lottery. He's not perfect and we've had our spats. But I can't wait for tomorrow."

Isn't that the truth? Cybelle remarked to herself.

Taking the "microphone", Samantha inquired, "You're here on his home turf. How does it feel?"

"Well, I've been here before to visit Aunt Paula, but this is his wonderland. Other than Tucson, he felt at home. Of course, certain people had a lot to do with that. Here, he has structure, caring friends and really strong relationships."

Karen smiled. "I was just his friend, but somehow, I looked into his eyes and felt a connection. I admit that grew stronger after we talked a few times, but his life turned for the better here. Angie, before I go any further, I wanted to stress that I'm talking about the past. Despite everything, his happiness is still paramount to me."

Angie nodded. "Thank you, Karen, but I already know that. Oh, to do for him what he does for me!"

"That was happening from the moment you two met in San Antonio," Karen assured her.

"Well, it's been a long day and we need our beauty sleep for tomorrow," Samantha urged after they had talked for another hour.

"I'll be back. I want to see how Mike's doing," Karen indicated, heading downstairs.

The others returned to their rooms, considering their thoughts and sentiments for the upcoming ceremony.

Chapter 9

After making sure that everything was set in the banquet room, Dave drove the other guys back to Cybelle's house. Fortunately, her husband, Mike, had beaten them back to the place and had everything set up.

"Come in, guys!" he greeted.

The guests walked in and saw a table full of snacks and a keg set up.

"Looks good," Dave complimented.

"For you, Buddy, only the best! You're a condemned man now!"

That remark spurred some laughter.

"Oh that's cute," the librarian cracked. "Petersen, are you letting them in on your so-called humor?"

"No, they had it already," the agent jabbed.

"We want to know what's going through your head right now," Frank probed.

"I can't put the exact words to it. It's almost scary and exciting all at the same time, yet it feels right. When Karen and I broke up, I never thought I'd find the right person. Angie's the right person. I know it," Dave explained.

The phone rang at that moment. "Hello?" Mike answered.

"Mike, it's Randy. How's it goin'?"

"Hey, Bro, why aren't you here with us?"

"Well, Terri and I are just putting Miri to bed. Still, I'll be up there early tomorrow. That park's by the high school, right?" Randy wondered,

"Yeah. I'll put your brother on. Hang on."

Dave asked, "Hey, Randy, what's up?"

"Nothing much. Just putting your favorite niece to bed. I'll be meeting you at the park with my glove if that's all right," Randy informed him.

"Sure. Kiss the Squirt and I'll see you then," Dave replied and hung up. Turning to the others, he told them, "We're going to have a good group for tomorrow."

Frank stated, "I'm sure. Y'know, Dave, back at APRHS, we thought that Karen would be wearing white for you. Who would have guessed?"

"Time changes everything," Dave mused.

"But it's nice to keep the memories," Steve noted. "So, what are we doing gabbing like the girls? We have movies and beer, don't we? What do we start with?"

Mike popped a video in the VCR. "Comedy, what else? The Condemned needs a laugh before tomorrow."

Ain't that the truth? Still, let them ride me. I'm doing the right thing, the librarian mused as the feature started.

Chapter 10

After tossing and turning for the entire night, Dave finally gave up on the idea of sleep. Finally at 7:30, he got up off the couch and put on his robe. Stepping out of the front door, he stood on the porch and admired the scene. What a beautiful start to the day...the Most Important Day of my Life. After a few more minutes, he walked back into the house and the kitchen. He ground the Chocolate Cherry beans and perked the coffee. Taking a deep breath, he took in the aroma and smiled widely.

"Getting ready are we?" his brother-in-law asked.

He turned to see Mike standing there in his robe. "I watched you on the couch. You didn't sleep a wink, you know?"

"I know." He shrugged. "It just feels different. Don't ask...I don't know why."

Mike chuckled, "I do. Today's the day. It's no longer just about you. Now, you have someone else to think about too. May it be as good a change for you as it has for me."

They toasted with their coffee cups.

"Thanks. Well, I need to change and get over to the field. Charles will be there in about an hour or so," Dave told him, guzzling the coffee and hitting the shower. He came out in his football jersey, sweats, vest, and jeans. "See you later." With that, he grabbed his glove and jumped into Bessie, taking off for the field.

****

About that time, Angie's eyes snapped open. He's making coffee. Mmm.... She left her room and paced about the upstairs hall. All night, she had felt this weird buzzing in her head. But then, she realized that it was Cybelle's living room she was seeing in her mind's eye. What the? Smelling the coffee cinched it for her. Somehow, I can sense what he's thinking. Weird. Still, that chocolate cherry's intoxicating.

"Angie?" Cybelle asked.

"Hmm? Oh, Cybelle," the oncologist realized. "Sorry, I was somewhere else for a second."

Yeah, I'll say. Despite their differences, the priestess had always maintained an empathic connection with Dave. She's picking up on him now too. "I'll bet. Thinking about Dave, huh?"

"Sure. Always," Angie admitted. What's that about?

If she can pick up on his thoughts, can he do the same with her? "How about we go get some coffee?"

"Sure," the older woman agreed, heading downstairs with her hostess. There they found Karen already sitting there finishing a glass of orange juice. "Couldn't sleep either?"

The nurse shook her head. "No. It's been a weird night. I've been doing a lot of thinking."

"Yeah. I know," Angie agreed. "Still, I'm glad today's here. By the way, why are you dressed so early?"

"I'm going to head out for a drive. I just need to do some thinking," Karen continued, taking her purse and heading out the door.

Now what? Angie wondered.

****

[McKnight field]

Dave parked the Subaru over by the fence in her preferred spot. He got out and sat on the bumper, surveying the diamond and trying to remember all of the events here-his first practice home run, the three shots he hit in The Most Important Game, the Catch (as the locals still called it) in that same game.

Walking on to the mound, he stretched and practiced his pitching motion. Yeah, it still feels right.

Ah agree.

What do you know about this?

Who d'ya think pitched those innings? Ah did.

Since he couldn't recall anything past the fifth inning of that game, Dave couldn't argue with the Child on that one.

Just then, a horn honked. Charles pulled in beside the Subaru and walked over. "Dave, ready to go? It's already warming up a bit."

He had been so deep in meditation he hadn't noticed. It's at least fifteen degrees warmer now than it was twenty minutes ago. The Empress, it has to be her.

The catcher strapped on his gear and walked behind home plate. "Let it fly." He squatted into position.

For the next thirty minutes, Dave fired pitch after pitch into the other's mitt, pounding out his nerves.

His slider's biting like a starving pit bull. Oh yeah, he's nervous. "So what's on your mind? Besides Angie, I mean?"

The librarian shrugged. "I don't know. Closing some doors while opening others."

Charles pointed at him. "Just make sure that one of those doors isn't my sister's, all right?" He fired a hard return throw back for added emphasis.

"Hey, I already went through that stupid phase, remember? That isn't going to happen again," Dave assured him, throwing a forkball.

"Good. Why don't you tell her yourself? Hi, Sis."

"Yeah. When do I do that? During the ceremony?"

"How about now?" Karen asked, stepping onto the field. "I wanted to see how you were doing so I left your sister in charge."

"Just what I told your brother. I have big transitions to make and too little time to do them in. You?"

He fired another slider toward the plate.

The catcher snapped the pitch into his glove and threw it back even as he informed her. "He's really keyed up, Karen."

She nodded. He's really nervous. "Look, Dave, just let it happen. All right? But let us all share in it." She walked out to the mound and requested, "Promise me something?"

"If I can," he agreed.

"Promise me that you won't try to cut me out of your life again. That really hurt me. I wish sometimes that things could have worked out differently, but..." She looked at her wedding ring and watched it sparkle in the warming sunlight before continuing, "...but they didn't. We've been through so much together. Both Mike and I want to be there for you and Angie. What do you say?"

Dave considered this for a minute and looked at her. Although she looked a little older and a bit heavier than she had in high school, she was still the same person who had stood by him so many times. She's right. "No problem. Karen, I know that and I'm sorry about that. Come here." He embraced her. "Of course, you'll have to help me through the ceremony."

"How? By saying 'I do'? Sorry, sir, I'm already taken," she kidded him, her eyes sparkling in relief. She knew what he was getting at and was letting him know that she could count on him for support. "Keep going, boys!" she remarked while sitting in one of the dugouts and sipping a coffee.

****

The others arrived right before 10:00. Randy pulled in first followed by Mike Rogers and the other guys.

Karen stood up and walked over. "Hi, guys! You've missed a good workout here! Well, I'm heading back to Mrs. Wilcox's house. Don't be too long now. Remember, Angie's waiting."

"We'll leave at noon," Dave promised, throwing the ball to Rick.

She nodded and got into her car heading for the 'bridal camp'.

****

About an hour earlier, Angie sat in the kitchen, feeling her nerves eating at her. "Will 1:00 please get here?"

Her mother soothed, "Now, Dear, wishing won't make the time go by any faster."

"And knowing Dave, he's just as spastic right now," Cybelle added.

Somehow, I know she's right. But I don't understand how.

"He is that," Karen agreed walking in the door. "I just had a little heart to heart with him."

"About what?" Angie wondered.

"I asked him not to cut me or Mike out of your lives," Karen told her.

"Why would he do that? That makes no sense," Angie doubted.

"That was a different circumstance, Karen," Samantha assured her. "After this afternoon, you won't have to worry about that anymore."

"I know," the nurse agreed, smiling warmly. "He said that too."

"There, now," Mrs. Blackwell assured them. "You see? Everything's going to be just fine! Now, let's get ourselves some breakfast and talk a bit more, shall we?"

For the rest of the morning, they did just that.

Chapter 10

[Hall of Heroes-Nurrengaard]

Meroli surveyed the banquet chamber with satisfaction. For the past two days, he had put his best decorators to work, decorating the room to its finest. Accordingly, streamers hung from the walls, flowers adorned the edges of the room and a small spray sat in strategically placed intervals on the large banquet table and the smaller ones around it.

This will be a feast to remember. His cooks assured him that the food would be ready by mid-afternoon. The wine sat in casks in the storeroom far below.

"Impressive, my friend," a familiar voice complimented.

The elf lord turned to see Grimwilkin standing behind him, leaning on his staff. "Thank you. How are things otherwise?"

"The Faerie Empress' efforts are almost complete as well. The couple and their guests will be arriving shortly as well. This is splendid, Meroli. You have surpassed yourself."

"I'll say," Ferali, the gnome warrior agreed, lumbering into the room in his finest armor. My honor brother deserves no less.

"My thanks to you both. If you'll excuse me, I have some other matters to attend to," the host declared.

The wizard nodded and said to the gnome, "Come, Ferali, the Empress expects us both." Raising his staff, he transported them both away.

****

[Faerie Realms]

As with Meroli, the Faerie Empress walked into the Crystal Cathedral and looked around at the decorations. The priestesses and the sprites have outdone themselves. This is splendid. Sensing another presence, she smiled. "The High Priestess of Althanor is always welcome. Please step forward."

The priestess approached her and bowed. "Lady, you honor me."

"And deservedly so. The sisters do splendid work. Is everything ready for this afternoon?"

"Cybelle awaits the signal. I will send Keira to help her transport the others since it's not time for the former to reveal her true nature yet."

"No, it is not. Thank you for your thoroughness," the Empress complimented.

"It is the sign of all good preparedness," Grimwilkin concurred, stepping forward with Ferali.

"Grimwilkin, Ferali, how go the preparations in Nurrengaard?" the Empress inquired.

"Everything is ready in the hall. The feast will be ready at the appointed time," the wizard noted.

"Very good," the Empress assessed, concentrating for a minute. "The armor is here, is it not? David and Garth will be clad in their traditional armor. That is my only request. I have sent my best costumers to assist Angela in her preparations."

"It will be done," the gnome assured her. "With your leave and Grimwilkin's, I will see them both back here."

"I shall be with you as well," the wizard agreed. "Lady, with your leave."

"Thank you both," she responded. "Go forth."

The two companions bowed and disappeared from view.

Yes, this shall be quite the event. Quite the event indeed.

[Cybelle's house]

Dave led the others back into the house gladly. They had held a spirited workout and, for the most part, had burned off the nerves. At least until we get up to the altar.

"Okay, guys. Who wants the shower first?" Mike announced.

The librarian looked around anxiously. Who else is here? "Okay, come out!"

"Relax, my friend," Grimwilkin advised, entering the room with Ferali. "We were admiring the house is all."

"Who is this?" Mike wondered anxiously. "And how did you get into this house?"

"This is Grimwilkin-you might call him a wizard. The shorter person is Ferali...Dave's honor brother. It's a long story. They're from the Inner Realms," Garth explained.

"Is that the place where you both went to rescue Karen, Angie, and Miranda?" Steve asked.

"It is indeed," Ferali indicated grimly. "And it is where you all shall be going on this day as well."

The others looked at their friends with amazement. No wonder there were no church or dinner arrangements made.

"David and Garth, could you come with us please?" Grimwilkin requested.

"Where are they going?" Steve inquired. "We still need them back here before the wedding."

"It's okay," the librarian assured them. "We're going to get ready, but we'll do it there. See you all at the ceremony."

Grimwilkin advised, "Be ready in one and a half of your hours, Gentlemen." With that, he disappeared along with Ferali, Dave, and Garth, leaving the others amazed.

Mike just stared at that place for a minute in stunned silence. This is just too weird. Finally, he told the others, "Okay, we need to start getting ready. Who's first for the shower?"

[Wilcox House]

About noon, Cybelle started feeling anxious about the preparations. How do I assist the Mother and the Empress without exposing myself? Excusing herself from the group, she walked into her bedroom and shut the door to insure privacy.

Seeing the telltale mists appear, she turned to see her fellow priestess, Keira, step into the area. "Keira. It's time, then?"

"Indeed. Don't worry, Cybelle, your secret will remain safe for now. I will oversee the transportation of the guests to the cathedral. Dress in the outfit Angela selected for you. Only in an emergency will you be called upon," her sister priestess assured her. "Are you refreshed, then?"

"Yes. Does the Empress need to see me?" Cybelle asked anxiously as she slipped into her dress.

"Not at the moment," Keira stated.

Then a knocking came from the door. "Cybelle?" Brother Tony asked. "May I come in?"

Seeing Keira nod, she let him into the room and shut the door. "Brother Tony, this is...." Turning to her fellow priestess, she went into her act. "What did you say your name was?"

"Keira." Cybelle, you play your role well. "I represent the Faerie Empress here. It is in her realm you will perform the ritual."

The minister stared at the priestess for a minute. "I see...so she exists? Pardon me, I have seen the legends and myths surrounding her, but didn't think she was...."

"Real? Oh, she indeed exists as you will find out in a short while. It was she who ordered Angela's wedding dress to be improved and arranged for this event. And she is very happy that you are to be the minister."

The elderly man stared incredulously. She actually exists! "Why is that?"

Keira stated, "It is because you respect the Old Ways in addition to your adherence to the faith of Jesus. For that, you have our gratitude, Anthony Caldwell."

"My pleasure. You understand that I have to perform the Christian rite," he informed her. "Just as long as it's not an affront to the Empress."

"Of course. For the sake of this world's laws, she is making an exception for today. For respecting us enough to point that out, you have my thanks as well as that of my sisters. Cybelle, right?"

"Yes?"

"Go and start the others' preparations. The Empress' costumers will be here any time now to assist Angela," Keira pointed out.

Cybelle nodded and left the room.

"Once again, you have my thanks," Keira told him vanishing into the mists. "I'll be back in two hours." Saying that, she vanished into the mists, leaving the minister to shuffle through his thoughts.

****

Mrs. Blackwell looked at the clock. It's 12:30 and Angie's not even ready yet. "Umm, Angie, I think it's time we did your hair."

"Relax," Cybelle assured her. "It's taken care of."

She's got something up her sleeve, Karen thought to herself. At that moment, a knock came from the door. She opened it to find two female elves about three and a half feet high waiting there. "Oh!"

One of the callers spoke up. "This is where Angela Blackwell is, correct?"

Cybelle urged, "Come in! Okay, Angie, let's go to my room. Time to get ready!"

The oncologist nodded to her mother and left the area with the newcomers.

Mrs. Blackwell shook her head in wonder. What's next?

Chapter 11

[Molori's palace, Nurrengaard]

Dave stood in front of the mirror adjusting his armor and surcoat. For the past hour, he had pried and attempted to get the outfit to feel right on himself. It's nerves, Dave. The armor's fine.

"You look splendid," Ferali complimented, walking into the room. "Lousain himself wouldn't dare to stand in your way."

"No, he wouldn't. Only my nerves would do that," the librarian commented.

"Relax. Angela is a radiant woman. You two are worthy of each other," his honor brother assured him.

"Indeed," Meroli concurred. "And a splendid day it is."

"Thanks to you, my friend. Will Harokin be there?" Dave responded.

"He's there now along with Eadmer and Elsin," the elf-lord informed him. "Now, we should follow. Master Singleton had already departed for there and so should we."

"Are we set, then?" Grimwilkin inquired.

"We are," Dave stated, giving the gnome a pat on the shoulder. "Walk with me for a bit?"

"Into the mouth of the Pit if need be," his companion asserted as they disappeared into the mists.

****

[Crystal Cathedral-Faerie Lands]

Brother Tony inspected the building, eyeing every detail. It's even more fantastic than the legends I read about it. Incredible indeed!

"It is certainly that," the Faerie Empress agreed, appearing before him. "And I thank you for your understanding."

He bowed ever so slightly. "I've read about you, but to see you...in front of me there...."

"I am very real and you are standing here in my cathedral," she assured him. Sensing his next thought, she continued, "Your questions do not offend me, Anthony Caldwell. I appreciate your openness."

"Thank you. I trust that Keira told you about the rite?"

"Yes. I would ask one thing-are you aware of the Saxon conclusion to your Christian rite? I ask that you proclaim them married in the name of your god and the goddess whom I serve. Their destinies are tied to both paths as is yours," the elf-queen requested. "If you are not comfortable with that, I can have the High Priestess add Her blessing as well."

"Forgive me, Lady. Could you do that? As a representative of my church, I haven't the authority to do so. However, to be able to do a service like that would be an honor."

"It shall be done then," the Empress proclaimed. Turning to the elder priestess standing behind her, she requested, "Is that all right with you?"

"Indeed it is," the Althanorian high priestess concurred. "And I agree. Given the role that the couple and his sister will play in future events, it's entirely appropriate."

At that moment, Dave approached them along with Rick, Steve, Garth, and Frank. "My lady," he bowed. "Thank you for this favor."

"Thank you for your service," the Empress replied. "Rise and prepare yourself, David. You are about to play an important role in the events of two worlds."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning you are one who will seek to build tolerance from persecution and bigotry throughout your life. Today, your ceremony will encompass the Old Ways with the Christian ones. Christian, you are, but having served the goddess, she wishes a place at this table as well," she continued.

"That's fine with me," Dave agreed. "How will that change the ceremony?"

"There is one part to be added," the high priestess advised. "Since you and Angela will have already sworn your fealty already, it is only a matter of wrapping the cloth around your wrists, binding you together for all time."

"I trust this is all right with you?" Brother Tony asked. While I do have my misgivings as a minister, she's right.

"I'm fine with it," the librarian replied. Seeing the guests milling at the doors, he mentioned, "Steve, Rick, can you get to your posts?"

The duo rushed back and began to help people into the rows in an orderly fashion.

****

[Wilcox House]

Angie sat in front of the mirror, gazing at her reflection nervously. "I can't believe it. It's here."

"Yeah, it is," Karen concurred, hugging her friend as she helped straighten the tiara. "And you look awesome. Just think good thoughts, all right?"

"I will. Thank you, Karen, for this moment and for everything," Angie smiled as she gripped her friend's hand.

"You're welcome. Don't keep us all waiting too long now," the nurse urged, disappearing into the mists.

Her father approached her. "Angel, it's time, I guess. You know how proud I am of you right now?"

"Yes," she agreed, turning to face him. "And I want to say how much I love you and Momma, Daddy!" She embraced the elderly man.

Look at her! I can't believe she's all grown up. And this wedding's unbelievable. I never thought I'd see her like this. Whoever this 'Faerie Empress' is, I thank her for giving Angie and us this moment. "And I love you, Angie." The music wafted through the portal. "I take it that's our cue?"

"It is," Keira stated. "Come now. It's a time of great joy for us all."

Angie stood up and dropped the veil over her face. Angie, this is it. With that, she held her father's hand and stepped into the mists.

****

[Minutes earlier]

Everything at the cathedral was set. Rick and Steve finished seating everyone in just under fifteen minutes before finding their places by the door. Lydia appeared through the mists and took her place next to Mrs. Blackwell.

Then Karen stepped into the place and admired it for a second. I knew it would be fabulous, but this defies description! Gosh! Forcing herself back to the task at hand, she headed for the altar and greeted the others. "So, how are we doing here?"

"All set here," Dave presumed. "And on your end?"

"Angie should be here any minute," she advised.

Then, they saw the ushers signal them to start. Cybelle and Samantha got into their procession spots next to them.

Then the music started and the events started.

First, Cybelle and Steve walked to their places and sat down.

Then, Rick and Samantha followed them, but sat across the aisle.

Karen stood across from Dave, giving him an encouraging smile.

At his side, Frank asked low, "How are you doing?"

"Okay, I...oh wow!" he whispered in awe.

Angie strolled in under her father's escort. The dress sparkled in the sunshine. The jewels hung around her neck and on her head making her seem like royalty. The veil, although, covering her face, accentuated her brown eyes and the delicate curves of her face.

Dave looked at Brother Tony anxiously.

He smiled warmly. Look at her! Our little Angel has grown up. Truly, she is a princess! He nodded as her father led her in front of him.

He cleared his throat and looked at the High Priestess who nodded back to him. With that, he began, "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today in this sacred place to witness the union of this man, David, with this woman, Angela. Marriage, no matter what the faith, is a sacred institution. It is the bond on which our society rests...for from it comes the next generation. Now, who gives this woman to be wed?"

Mr. Blackwell indicated, "I do, her father."

"And who would marry her?"

"I would," Dave replied warmly.

"Good," the minister responded as he pressed into the ceremony. About three minutes later, he asked, "Angela, do you wish to marry this man?"

She smiled and recalled the answer as they had rehearsed it. "Volo, Frater."

He nodded and asked Dave, "David, do you wish to marry this woman?"

"Volo, Frater," he agreed.

Brother Tony explained, "For those of you who don't speak Latin, 'volo' means 'I do'. And now, who has the bride's ring?"

"I do," Frank said, handing the token to his friend and nodding.

Dave considered it for a minute before taking a deep breath and repeating the minister's words. "I, David, take thee, Angela, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, as long as we live." With that, he slid the ring on her finger. As he did so, he looked into her eyes.

She smiled and blushed. He did it! Now can I?

"Who has the groom's ring?" Brother Tony asked.

"I do." Karen smiled and handed it to Angie along with a helpful smile.

Angie looked at the wedding band, at Dave, and finally to the minister. After he recited to her, she repeated, "I, Angela, take thee, David, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, as long as we live." She put the band on his finger and gave the hand a quick squeeze.

Brother Tony nodded approvingly before explaining to the audience. "There is one extra part to this ceremony that will be performed by the High Priestess of Althanor." Turning to the elderly woman to his left, he nodded.

"Thank you," she accepted, stepping forward with a green strip of cloth in her hand. "This ceremony, as with any marriage, is sacred for it speaks of the rebirth of life. For you both, the goddess sends her special greetings through the Faerie Empress and the sister priestesses. Can you now hold the ringed hands for me?"

Angie looked at Dave quizzically. What is this?

He nodded and smiled.

She shrugged. I can tell he's comfortable with this whole thing. All right. She grasped his hand.

"There's only one difference to be told for these two. Their souls have walked together in the past and will do so again in the future. They are linked forever in the birth and rebirth of things under the sun, the moon, and stars. Just as rain falls to earth, condenses into vapor, rises back into the sky, and rains again-so too will you both be together." She wrapped the cloth around their wrists. "May the goddess continue to smile on you both. Now, minister?"

He smiled and stepped back to his place. "By the authority vested in me by God's church...and in collaboration with the fellow children of our planet, I pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Angie sighed and lifted her eyes to meet his. At last!

For a minute, he stared at her dumbfounded.

Frank nudged him. "Go for it."

The librarian nodded and lifted the veil to see Angie's face ringed with the Empress's tiara and the flowers in her hair. I'll always see her like this, he promised himself. "I kiss you as my wife." He did so and they embraced passionately.

Karen looked on with great pleasure. "Good for you two. May you have the happiness you both deserve."

Brother Tony leaned over to her and agreed, "Amen, Karen." Then he announced, "May I be the first to present Mr. and Mrs. David Dubois?"

Dave and Angie stared at each other incredulously. They had really done it. After everything, they were now married.

"Shall we?" she asked nervously, holding her hand out.

"We shall," he agreed, taking her hand in his own as they descended from the platform and made their way to the receiving line where they and their loved ones thanked everyone for coming on that day.

When that had been finished, Ferali tapped Dave on the shoulder. "Remember me?"

"Like I could forget you," the librarian scoffed warmly and embraced the gnome.

"You got that right," Angie agreed, kissing their friend on the cheek. "Especially after you stood by us in the Pit."

"It was my pleasure," Ferali concurred. "Now, it's time to return to Nurrengaard for the feast."

"Indeed," Grimwilkin agreed, raising his staff. "Please walk through the door if you would."

Rick and Steve guided the rest of the group through the gateway. Glancing back at their cohorts, they followed the others into the mists.

For a minute, Karen, Angie, Dave, and Garth waited silently.

Then Ferali stuck his head back inside the gate. "We're ready. Come, my friends."

"Yes, it is your time," the wizard concurred, sweeping his hand forward and urging them in.

Karen grinned and followed Garth in.

Dave rubbed Angie's arm and admired her hand. "The hand's more beautiful now than ever, Princess." He kissed it.

"Dave, they're waiting...."

"Yeah?" he snickered. "Let them. They'll understand. I want this moment for us." Pressing his mouth to hers, he took a long moment in emotional bliss. "How's that?"

"Dreamy," she sighed, her eyes wet with happy tears. "I want to stay here forever."

"Ahem," Grimwilkin interrupted. "My apologies, but your friends await you."

The bride blushed. "Sorry, Grimwilkin."

He chuckled. "That's quite all right. Now, follow me."

The couple hurried through the mists before the wizard closed them behind him.

For a moment, The Faerie Empress surveyed the surroundings with satisfaction. The die is now cast. The worlds too long separated will now be one again. With that, she vanished into the mists herself, heading for solitude and somber thought on what is and what was to come.

Chapter 12 [Hall of Heroes-Nurrengaard]

A few minutes earlier, the guests slowly emerged from the cathedral into the Hall of Heroes, the chamber struck them all dumb with its splendor and majesty.

"Where is this?" Mr. Blackwell wondered, holding his wife closely to him.

"Relax," Garth assured them all. "Now, I give you our host, Meroli, the citadel's lord!"

"Thank you, Master Singleton," the elf lord accepted, rising from his throne. "Please accept my hospitality as well as that of the people of Nurrengaard! Sit and relax! Today's affair is a celebration of a hero and his lady. He's my comrade in arms twice renowned in the struggle with the darkness over yonder ridge. Please sit and enjoy. If my servants and I can get you anything, please let us know." Seeing Grimwilkin nod, he indicated, "It's time for the important people to enter! May I present the Lord David Dubois and his bride, the Lady Angela."

Eadmer and Elsin rose from their places and walked over to the door. "Honor guard!" they called.

In response, a dozen soldiers split in two groups, each manning a side of the aisle.

"Swords!"

They drew their blades and held them in front of themselves.

"Salute!"

Tilting the blades, they formed a tunnel over their heads.

Then the couple appeared in the doorway. He strode purposefully into the area in his armor-the sword and bow at his side. She, still clad in the jewels and the elegant dress, walked beside him. They headed for the main table where they sat and enjoyed the attention.

As they proceeded in this fashion, their Companions from the Last Great Battle raised their glasses in a toast to them.

Taking this all in, Meroli smiled warmly. Truly, David, now you see...you were never alone and now, you never will be again. Raising his hands, he proclaimed, "Now, we feast!"

At the cue, his cooks and servants carried in tables' worth of fine meats, poultry, vegetables and fine wine. Truly, this was a magnificent sight-one that would have made any caterer jealous to say the least.

After everyone was served, they sat and enjoyed each other's fellowship for about two hours.

Finally, the time for the toasts had arrived. At the signal from Meroli, Frank stood up first.

"Everyone, welcome! I would like to thank our host and new friends for the wonderful weather and great hospitality! For our newlyweds, I wish only happiness to both of you. As I said in Westport, you're both great people who truly deserve to be happy. Hear! Hear!"

The audience clapped and echoed his sentiments.

"Karen," the elf lord called.

The nurse stood and raised her glass next. Here goes.... "Everyone, I would like to add my thanks to Frank's for everything. As I have discovered over the years, Merlori and his allies are wonderful friends and have been to us all. For that, thank you."

Taking a deep breath, she continued, "Dave and Angie, we have a long and complicated history between us. We had good times and bad. For a while, things fell apart. However, I have enjoyed being your close friend once again. Out of the affection I will always have for you both, I wish you the best in all things. Remember that you're friends are here for you in all things." Then she hugged and kissed them both in turn.

"You know it," Dave agreed.

"Right," Angie concurred.

Karen smiled and concluded, "Hear! Hear!"

The audience echoed her as well.

Once again, Meroli stood and called, "Ferali."

The stout gnome rose from his place and raised his glass. As he did so, he gazed warmly on his honor brother. You who have been through so much-may you now know peace and prosperity. "To our two friends, I add my congratulations as well! We have seen both the good of companionship and the worst of evil in our adventures together. You never faltered in the two quests into the Inner Realms-even into the deepest morasses belonging to the sorcerer, Lousain. I have stood with you on those times, watching as you fought valiantly on behalf of Outer Earth and your people. Now, as you enter this new stage, I doubt not that you'll rush in with the same abandon. Look after each other and remember what Karen said-if you need us, the Companions are here for you. I'm here for you."

Then the other soldiers stood and applauded loudly, threatening to bring the roof down. What he said was true for them as well.

Angie sighed and leaned her head against her husband's shoulder. She couldn't believe that anyone would salute them in this manner.

He rubbed her hand and smiled warmly. "Listen to them, Princess. They mean it. Enjoy the moment."

She nodded and grinned.

"Now, I think it's time for some music," the host requested. "And for your entertainment, I give you the Lady's finest minstrels."

Over at the side of the room, six elves sat with various instruments. At the signal, they began to play various tunes-some happy, some sad-all with a story of their own. For an hour, they played on, enthralling the audience with the beauty of their lyrics and the beats.

At the end, they stood up and bowed to the audience before leaving.

"I neglected a custom from your world...." Meroli realized. "The bride and groom has a dance, do they not? Would you like that?"

Angie nodded. "If that's okay."

"It is," the host agreed. "Cybelle?"

The bridesmaid/priestess nodded and walked out of the room. A minute later, she returned with her CD boom box. "Sorry, guys, it was the best we could do on short notice. Now, I think I know the song you two want, but go ahead and confirm it."

"Mary Chapin Carpenter's 'Grow Old with Me'-if you have it," Dave told her.

She chuckled and held up the CD. "Right here. Come on out here, you two."

He took a deep breath and turned to his wife. "Ready?"

She nodded and followed his lead.

They descended from the high table to the floor and took waltzing positions in its middle.

Cybelle started the music. Enjoy, you two.

As they moved to the tune, Angie floated on the lyrics, not believing everything going on around them. This is real! We're here! And I'm in his arms at last.

Standing in the corner, Grimwilkin smiled as well. A well-chosen tune indeed. By doing so, they've echoed the Faerie Empress' evocation. May you both be happy in the sunshine and darkness to come.

****

Shortly thereafter, the party broke up. The warriors and rulers gave their regards to the happy couple before departing to their own homes. Keira opened a portal, allowing the other guests to return to Earth.

After they had thanked their friends and family and the latter groups had departed, he turned to the dais. There the elf lord stood and at his side, the Faerie Empress beamed at them. "You have our thanks for a wonderful day, Milord, Milady."

"Thank you," Angie responded, curtseying.

"And we wish for you to spend the evening here with us if you would," the Faerie Empress bade. "The bridal chamber is being prepared."

Angie looked at him. "I'd like that, Dave, if you don't mind?"

"Fine with me. We accept, " the librarian replied.

"Splendid!" Meroli exclaimed. "It will be ready in an hour. Meantime, please feel free to walk in the gardens." With that, he departed to over see those preparations.

The glowing elf-queen gave them a silent smile. Only the goddess knows what awaits these two. They are strong and from their bond, worlds shall be saved and others will be forged. This, I do know. This is what is to come. With a nod, she vanished into thin air.

Angie looked around at the now vacant room wondering where everyone had gone. "The party's over, huh?"

"One party," Dave disagreed. "But our party's just getting started. C'mon. The flowers await."

With that, they left the room, looking for the beauty of the gardens.

Chapter 13 [Later that evening]

After enjoying the beauty of the gardens and enjoying the pleasant environs around them, the newlyweds followed Molori to the bridal chamber.

Their host unlocked the heavy oak door and swung it open. "I trust this will be to your liking? I hope you will enjoy it."

Dave smiled. "Thank you once again." With that, he swept his wife up in his arms.

"Dave!" she laughed and flushed.

"What's wrong with a guy carrying his wife over the threshold?" He made his way through the door, holding her in his arms.

"Karen was right. You're a hopeless romantic," she teased, still her eyes shone at him, telling of her true feelings. He's really doing this for me. Unbelievable.

He grinned and kissed her. "Why not? We put up with enough. Why not enjoy ourselves?" With that, he set her down on the bed. "And this room is a great place for our first night, isn't it?"

She looked around at the magnificent surroundings. Over the stone walls, tapestries depicted historical scenes. A fire blazed in the huge fireplace. An oak table stood in the corner accompanied by two chairs. The bed itself was king sized. "It is that. I can't believe Molori would do this for us."

"That's what friends do for each other," he assured her, walking over to the table. There he found a pitcher of wine. "You want some?"

"No thank you. I want to enjoy tonight with my senses intact," she declined. Then, she frowned.

Now what? "Princess, what is it?" he asked, sipping from his cup.

She shook her head. "I'm not good enough for you."

"Huh? You've got to be joking, Angie."

"No, I mean it. I'm too skittish and not good enough for you. You're a hero here and I'm the damsel in distress. Besides, you've been with Karen and she's prettier than I am."

Tell her, Bro. Tell her how ya'll feel, the Child responded.

Right. "Angie, stop it," he told her.

She sniffled, shaking, "Why?"

"Look, you're stronger than you give yourself credit for, all right. You survived the Pit until we could get there. You've stood by me this long. So you're a little nervous? It's normal," he assured her. Taking her hand, he gave a gentle tug. "Walk with me."

She furrowed her brow, but followed his lead. "All right," she agreed.

He smiled and led her over to the full-length mirror. Then, he stood behind her and asked, "What do you see?"

She sighed. What's this about? "I see me. Plain old me."

"You're not plain to me."

"Compared to Karen, I am."

He laughed warmly. "So this is all about?"

She glared at him. "I don't think that's funny!"

"Sorry. Okay, let's put this thing to rest. I was with Karen, but that was a long time ago. Who am I with right now?"

"Me."

"And whose ring is on your hand?"

"Yours."

"And whose band is on mine?"

"Mine," she sighed.

"That's right. Angie, I committed my life to making you happy today. That's all I want. Please accept that. Look, if you need time to get used to the idea, that's fine. I can wait," he soothed.

She smiled and clasped his hands in her. He means it. He really does mean it. "Sorry and thank you, Dave."

"My pleasure," he replied.

"Dave?" she asked.

"Yes?" he whispered in her ear.

"I don't want to wait," she told him, undoing the dress in the back and easing out of it. After fussing with hooks and clasps later, she stood in front of the mirror in her full glory. Every curve was gracefully sculpted. Her skin shone in the soft candlelight. Her breasts were medium-sized. "What do you think? You still have the receipt if you're not satisfied."

He ran his hands up and down her arms. "Never. Maybe you were an ugly duckling to some fools, Princess, but tonight, you became a swan. You're magnificent on the inside and the outside."

She clasped his hand and moved it to her left breast. "How's that?"

He caressed the area gently, rubbing the tip between his fingers.

She moaned, "Take me, please!"

He nodded and, after kissing her on the shoulder, carried her to the bed. "Comfortable?"

"Yes. I hope it'll be good for you too," she said hesitantly, lying down and watching as he shed his armor.

"Just relax. If it means anything, I'm nervous too," he advised, kissing her as he joined her on the bed. "I'll try to be gentle."

She smiled warmly as they embraced and began their rhythmic movement. For two hours, as they moved in unison, she felt her world explode and this unbelievable surge of energy. Then, as quickly as it began, he stated, "Whew! That's enough. Thank you, Princess."

"Anytime," she assured him, cuddling up to him with her softness. "I'm glad it was good for you too. Good night and thank you for making my dreams come true."

He laid there for a while, looking at the ceiling and then, at the woman in his arms. You don't know how good it was for me, Angie. You're the best for me. Thinking that, he kissed her. And now, you're truly my companion, and helpmate as I am yours. May I be a good husband to you in every regard. Lord knows, I'll never stop trying.

Holding her close to him, he allowed her breathing to relax him as he drifted off to sleep.

Conclusion

She awoke first the next morning. Wow. Did we really do it or was it a dream? Glancing under the sheets, she saw that the evidence and knew immediately. "I hope I was good enough for him," she worried.

"You were great," he muttered sleepily, a grin spreading across his face. "Good morning, Dr. Dubois."

"I really was?" she asked expectantly.

"This isn't about style points, Princess. I'm not looking for perfection since she's lying here next to me," he assured her.

She blushed. "It's good to hear you say that. Thanks."

"My pleasure. Now that we're consummated newlyweds, how about we get a shower and have some breakfast with Molori before we return home?" he queried.

She nodded and got out of bed. "I'd like that," she replied, putting on her robe and heading for the shower. "Come on."

He chuckled. Good, she's already feeling more confident. Covering himself, he followed her in there.

It had been a long road from the McDonald's to that point-full of twists and turns. Many things hadn't gone as planned and improvisation remained key to their relationship. But they had each other and, in the end, that's all that mattered.
