Introduction

Gabrielle, Bard Queen of the Amazons, writes….

During the first fall learning period at ‘college’, David Dubois thrived in the intense contemplation required by his professors. He learned more about his situation and enjoyed training with his abilities.

His friends, however, had their issues, having to adjust to their workload. They turned to David for assistance in that regard—which of course—he was more than happy to provide.

Around them, the Community and Adam Kane continued to prepare for the December deadline. Evangeline Desmoutiers pressed her students particularly hard and for good reason.

For she knew what would happen and designed the class to lessen the impact on David’s life at that point.

Chapter 1 [Tucson—Yavapai Hall; October 8, 1983]

After a tough day of classes, Angie sat at her desk, trudging through a Sociology textbook. Since coming to the university two months earlier, she had steadily chipped away at her assignments, keeping up with the reading and short essays.

But Midterm Season was right around the corner.

First round of papers and tests are coming right after fall break! She sighed and shook her head. Come on, Angie, you can do this!

Then came a knock at the door.

“Gosh! It’s time already?” she wondered. She grabbed her coat and opened the door. “Hi, Mike!”

“Hi, Angie,” Mike greeted with a warm smile. Since they had met in the first Art History class, he went out of his way to make her feel secure and comfortable. “Ready for the movie?”

“I definitely need the break,” she agreed as they headed out the door and down the hall. As they headed through the front door, they saw Karen coming in. “I’ll see you later.”

Karen nodded. Mike Montoya seemed like a nice guy and Angie liked him. She had talked to her roommate about being careful when going out. Leave her alone. She’s happy. As long as she gets her schoolwork done, who cares? She made a beeline for her room and the studies waiting for her there. Two papers next week. Great. She shook her head.

The phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Good evening, Karen, this is Brother Tony. How are you doing?” Brother Tony asked.

“Hi, Brother Tony, I’m fine. Thanks. Is everyone okay up there?” she answered.

“We’re fine. Thank you for asking. I was wondering if Angela was there?” he replied.

“She just went out for a little while. I’ll take a message if that’s okay?” she informed him.

“That’ll be fine. Between us, her parents wanted to talk with her about this friend—Mike is it?”

She shrugged. “He seems like a nice guy. He’s around a lot but she gets her homework done.”

“As long as you think she’s all right,” he relented. “Keep an eye on her if you would? I’d appreciate it.”

Wow. They really ride her, don’t they? Then again, after what Angie’s been through, they might have something there. She sighed, thinking what Tony Waterston had told her in their class. Do I have a right to play babysitter?

[“Now what?”] Dave asked.

She rolled her eyes. [“Eavesdropping, are we?”]

[“Can’t help but pick up on the emotions. You okay?”] he queried anxiously.

[“Everything’s fine with me. Angie’s study buddy’s got her parents and Brother Tony concerned. She hasn’t called them in a week and a half,”] she reported.

He frowned, considering what to say. It is Angie’s business but this isn’t like her. [“Maybe you should ask her about it? Or maybe when I’m down there this weekend, we can talk to her together?”]

[“The latter option would be great. Thanks, Dave. How are your classes going?”] she replied.

[“Lot of work but I’m enjoying them. The others are slogging their way through,”] he indicated.

[“When’s the next study session?”] she supposed.

[“Monday night after I get back. Is Tony going to be around this weekend? I’d like to get some throws in with him,”] he pointed out.

[“He told me to tell you that he’s looking forward to it. We’re also going to the football game on Saturday if that’s all right. Since his roommate’s gone for the weekend, mind sacking out with him? I don’t want to make Angie uncomfortable. Don’t worry. We’ll still have our ‘us’ time. You can count on that,”] she assured him. [“Try not to kill everyone tomorrow in class. Oh and bring something for Friday. Dr. Coltrane wants to meet you, remember?”]

Recalling Angie’s first day episode, he chuckled. [“Okay, I’ll do that. I have two oral reports tomorrow for the big classes. See you Friday morning.”]

[“See you then. Have fun at your workout tomorrow,”] he agreed before signing off.

Let’s hope it’s not that long of a weekend. Hopefully Angie’ll take it the right way! She cracked another book and started studying for her next exam.

Chapter 2 [Amherst—Cappuccino Express]

After he and Karen had finished talking, Dave headed for the Express for a quick mocha and a chance to meditate on things. Over the first eight weeks of the semester, he had kept himself buried in the books, managing of course to come up for air in the forms of the bi-weekly dinner with the Alvarezes, a visit to the Kents or meeting his girlfriend out west. I can’t wait for Friday!

Peggy watched him walk up to the counter with interest. “I know what you want.”

“I’m predictable. What can I say?” he retorted playfully. “Ready for tomorrow?”

“That’s our question for you, Dave. Between the Joan and genetic talks, you’ll be bouncing off of the walls, I’m sure. You know Dr. Kane’s over there?” she noted, motioning toward their professor. “I’ll bring the drinks over.”

“Thanks, Peggy,” he expressed while heading toward the table. “Excuse me, Dr. Kane. Is this seat taken?”

“No. Please feel free. Ready for tomorrow?” the geneticist asked.

“I’ve hit so many psych journals that my head’s going to pop but I think so. Since most of us were there or know, I wanted to talk about certain mutants who’ve stepped over the line and what it’s taken for us to stop them,” Dave suggested.

“As long as you don’t name names, that’ll be fine. Madame Desmoutiers told me that you’re presenting for her as well. Quite a day,” he supposed.

“I can handle it. Just need to pace myself.” Dave took a deep breath. “I have the weekend to bounce back.”

“You’ve earned a weekend to yourselves. How are she and Angela doing?” Adam wondered.

“They’re fine. I just want them to relax. Apparently, Angie has a developing relationship down there that Karen wants to talk with her about,” Dave explained. “Karen will be up here next weekend. We thought you’d want to check on her.”

“With her psionic abilities, I’d definitely like to keep an eye on her,” Adam noted. “I do have some exercises for you both and Peggy that I’d like to try.”

“We can do that,” Dave concurred while finishing his drink. “Anyhow, I need to be getting back to the dorm. See you tomorrow.” With that, he left.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with, David. Adam marveled at how composed the young man had been over the previous two months. Let’s hope it continues.

[Lewis Hall]

Meantime, Garth scribbled out a few more notes in his notebook dealing with The Battle of Maldon. Wonder what the TA would think if I mentioned what happened in the Dark Realm with the trolls? He smirked. That would definitely blow their minds!

“What’s going on?” Dave asked as he entered the room.

“April and Ally were just looking for you. They wanted some help this weekend for our quiz,” his roommate informed him.

“I was thinking about Monday night.” Dave put his books on the desk and grabbed a few others. “Don’t wait up. I’m seeing them and then heading for the library.”

As long as you can handle it. Garth went back to reading the poem in front of him.

****

[April’s room]

Meantime, April and Ally labored over their Western Civ. homework. Given that everything was coming together at once, they were having difficulty dealing with it.

“Another thirty pages of reading for tomorrow. Great,” Ally muttered.

“On top of this map quiz! How is Dave doing it?” April wondered. Hearing a knock at the door, she answered it. “Speak of the Devil! Did Garth say we were looking for you?”

“He mentioned it. How about late Monday afternoon/evening? I was planning on having a study session then,” he proposed.

The two girls frowned.

“Sorry. I have plans this weekend. Right after class, I’m out of here until Monday,” he apologized.

“You would have to go to Tucson this weekend, don’t you?” Ally groused.

“Excuse me? Hey, I’ve got all of my work done. I offered to help everyone. What’s the problem?” he argued.

April sighed, “It’s just that you disappear right when we need you the most, Dave. You know next week is our big exam and paper week. You have those papers done too?”

“That’s another reason I’m going. I can get more resources,” he declared. He felt his scalp going numb and took a deep breath to calm himself. “Besides, I do have the right to plan some time with my girlfriend, right? I need this time to balance myself.” Seeing the skepticism there, he put his hand up. “Seriously, according to Pauline, being out there is good for me. Something about the energy and all of that. Meantime, just see what you can do this weekend. Trust me; after those presentations tomorrow, I’m going to be bushed.”

April flushed with embarrassment. “Sometimes it’s hard to remember that you’re human too. You make it look so easy at times.”

“You know how long I spend in the library. Speaking of which, I’m heading there to drop off these books and get some more. Tell everyone to be ready Monday night for a study session. I’ll reserve the room right now. Keep going and I’ll see you tomorrow.” With that, he headed out and left them to their work.

“He’s right,” Ally mentioned. “We need to be more independent.”

“Let’s see what we can get done this weekend. Okay? Then we can get our help on Monday,” April planned, implementing what he had just said.

[Boston—Captain’s Hearth]

Even as the students prepped for their next intense day of classes, Nikki sat in her office, looking over the tavern’s monthly receipts. Business had been good, providing a windfall for her—and the Community’s—coffers. Still, she knew that the storm was coming. Less than two months to go. I hope Desmoutiers understands the potential consequences.

Winston had reported that the history professor had proceeded carefully, reporting with Nick and Clarise on her progress. In particular, the next day’s oral report made her smirk. Dubois is talking about Jeanne d’Arc, is he? I wonder if he’s….

Before she could complete the thought, a loud banging came from the door.

She scowled. “¿Qué es?

C’est Dijon!” the butcher growled.

She rolled her eyes. As if I need this. “Entre vous, Massacrer.”

The Enforcer lord stalked into the room, slamming the door behind him and taking the seat in front of her. As he did so, he stared at her venomously.

The display didn’t faze her in the least. Rather, she arched an eyebrow at him. <”State your business, Dijon. I don’t suppose this is a social call.”>

<”You know why I’m here! You’re doing nothing about Dubois and his friends!”> he insisted.

She poured two goblets of blood wine and handed one to him. <”What would you have me do? Provoke Le Puer?”>

<”The boy is uncovering the truth!”> he argued.

<”Let him!”> She took a measured draught from her glass. <”You know that he will be talking about La Pucelle tomorrow?”>

<”Her?”> He brought his fist down on the table, shaking the chamber. <”Then he learns too much!”>

<”According to Nicolas, he already knew about Rouen and your role, Dijon. The problem is that this is personal for him as well.”> She looked pointedly at him. <”Bad enough your witch provokes him. You show up there tomorrow, he will change.”>

<”And then, I will have my revenge!”>

Her eyes glowed at him. “NON!” <”I have received permission to attend the class. You show your face and the Council will know.”>

<”Does the Council know that you favor the boy?”> he countered.

She shook her head. <”Dubois knows I would kill him myself if it goes that far. The priestess and the Elf Queen protect him however.”>

<”Bah! Soon he will feel my wrath. You will not be able to protect him in the past.”> He stood and stalked out of the chamber.

Such theatrics! She shook her head and finished the wine before finishing her affairs.

Chapter 3 [Next night—Amherst]
[Cappuccino Express—5:45 PM]

Dave sat in his usual corner booth, reviewing his notes for the French History seminar. After the biogenetics report earlier that afternoon, he had camped out to get his bearings. In the next hour, he would pick up the packets from the copy place next door. His notes were coming together. All in all, it seemed that everything was fitting well together.

“Dave?”

He looked up to see Dr. Alvarez standing there. “Dr. A, please take a seat. What can I get you?”

The superintendent raised his cup. “I’m all set. Thanks. Ready for your report?”

“All set, I think. The Corner Copier will have the packets ready at 6. My notes are here,” the teenager revealed, holding up the four sheets. Then he considered the worried look in front of him. “What’s wrong? You’ve got that crinkled thing going.”

“It’s just that…the house is so empty. Next year, Charles will be gone. I imagine you’ll be in Arizona with Karen,” the older man lamented.

Too bad I can’t tell him. I wish Pauline would let me. It would make things SO much easier. “It’s not like we won’t be back to visit, Dr. A. Besides, you and your wife deserve some time to yourselves. You’ve dealt with enough of my garbage to earn a lifetime of relaxation.”

“Dave, that’s kind of you to say. However, you’ve taken a lot of stock in yourself. We gave you the backdrop for that.” Dr. Alvarez considered him, confirming his admiration. I do hope things work the way you want them to. “Well, I’m disturbing you.”

“Are you kidding? Stay. I insist. Is there anything you want to pass along to Karen when I see her tomorrow?” Dave insisted.

“That we miss her and are looking forward to next weekend. Thank Pauline please,” Dr. Alvarez requested.

“Done.” He felt a familiar vibration coming through the door and saw its source. “Ms. diCosta?”

Buena noche, Dubois. It is a wonderful evening for a presentation, no?” Nikki set a box down in front of him. “Your handouts.”

“Thank you but…what do I owe you?” Dave asked, expecting a catch.

“Nada. Your teacher has invited me to attend this class. Anything to help you,” she declined while taking a seat at the table. “Dr. Alvarez.”

“Ms. diCosta,” Ricardo replied, feeling as always uneasy about her presence. “Is there something we should be worrying about?”

“Not that I know of,” she lied, knowing full well that Dijon was lurking nearby. “Nicolas asked me to come and Madame Desmoutiers invited me as well. Besides, I want to hear David’s assessment of certain figures.” She smiled knowingly.

“Believe me; I have the shredder ready for a couple of twerps including a certain duke and bishop,” Dave revealed.

I’m going to enjoy this especially knowing that Dijon’s going to get his just desserts. She sat and let the two men continue their discussion for another fifteen minutes before they all left.

This was going to be some presentation…..

[Herter Hall—6:50 PM]

Garth skimmed through the notes once again, pondering the ins and outs of the Hundred Years War. Needless to say, remembering who was English, French and Burgundian drove him nuts. “How does Dave remember this stuff anyhow?”

“His grandfather made him study and study some more,” Nancy replied while sitting beside him.

“Glad he’s doing this talk,” April added. “I know what Garth means. I read the text three times and still don’t remember everyone.” She turned to her cousin. “He was in seclusion again, right?”

“At the Express actually,” Peggy reported. “Have mocha, will prep. He had dropped something off at the copy place next door.”

“Packets too?” Garth winced. “Is someone trying for ultra-brownie points or what?”

“Just being prepared, Garth,” Dave countered as he and Nikki entered the room. “We have company for tonight.”

“Your professor invited me. Besides, I wanted to hear this particular talk. Dr. O’ Connor regrets he could not come,” the Elder responded.

Madame Desmoutiers entered the room. “David, would you mind giving me a hand?”

“Sure,” he agreed, heading out into the hall. He returned bearing a wall map which he set down in the front of the room. “Nice prop.”

“We aim to please,” his professor expressed with a combination of mirth and cynicism. Then she headed over to the guest. “Bon soir. <Thank you for coming.>”

<”I wouldn’t miss this for anything. David has quite the talk planned from what I understand. Nicolas sends his regrets,”> Nikki informed her.

<”I will have David send him an extra copy,”> the professor informed her while looking at her watch. <”It’s time to start.”> She returned to the front and addressed the class. “Bon soir, mes Ami. Tonight, we have a guest from Boston, Ms. Nikki diCosta, for our discussion. As for our topic, we will discuss the latter part of the Hundred Years War. To lead off, I’ve asked David to talk about La Pucelle, Jeanne d’Arc, and the French cause.”

Dave walked up to the front of the room and hung the map. “Thanks, Madame Desmoutiers. Let me get these handouts going around the room.” Dividing the stack in two, he gave half to each side. “Okay. I hope these will help with the reading and such.” Then he stopped cold and looked toward the window. What the?

[“Dave, what is that? It almost feels like Dr. O’ Connor but different,”] Peggy pointed out.

[“We got us a potential stalker.”] He frowned, matching the particular aura. It’s the same as that night in Boston back in December. Great. A vampire stalker. He eyed Nikki.

The former princess felt Dijon’s telltale presence as well. “Go on, Dubois. It shouldn’t concern you.” At least not for tonight.

“Fine,” Dave agreed before launching into his talk. For the next half hour, he talked about the period, focusing on the Maid, her immediate accomplishments and long term effects on the landscape. Detail by detail, he progressed, giving the whole account and talking about her adversaries in turn.

As he discussed Dijon, the feeling spiked dramatically. Somebody really hated that! Once again, he glanced at the window before continuing his discussion. Then he took a few questions before turning it back over to the professor. “Thanks.”

Merci,” she responded. “Indeed, it brings up deeper issues surrounding Burgundian influence in the conflict. Let’s examine those more closely….”

****

[9:00 PM]

After what turned out to be a lively discussion, Madame Desmoutiers dismissed the seminar, reminding them that their first papers were due in a week.

For Dave, he was glad that the day had finally ended. He ran his hands through his hair while easing his anxiety. Almost time to get out of here. He stood up and collected his things.

“Very nicely done, Dubois,” Nikki complimented. “I shall let Dr. O’ Connor know. Do give my best to your friends out west.” With that, she headed out.

He headed toward the door where his classmates waited for him. “What did you think?”

“In a word—wow,” April told him. “So when are you taking off?”

“As soon as I can pack,” Dave indicated.

“David, sorry but I’d like to talk with you,” the professor requested. “Carry the map?”

“Sure,” he agreed. “See you guys back at the dorm.” He followed her out of the room.

“What was that about?” Peggy wondered.

“Beats me. We’ll find out, I’m sure,” Garth noted as they headed back to Lewis.

****

[Madame’s office]

The professor let Dave in and shut the door behind them. “Please take a seat. Don’t worry; you are fine, David.”

“I hope I didn’t go on too long,” he fretted, feeling nervous.

“No. Your classmates are struggling with the information. Dr. O’ Connor mentioned your background with the subject. How is your paper coming?” she queried.

He shrugged. “I have most of the research done but I plan to spend some library time this weekend in Tucson.”

“Do that. I look forward to what you have to say about Dijon,” she indicated.

What’s her deal about Mustard Boy? He recalled how several weeks earlier she had insisted he do something on the nobleman. “I’ll do my best. Is there anything else?”

She glanced toward the ominous tome. Not yet. “Be careful and do have fun this weekend, David. Next time she is here, I would like to meet Karen if that’s all right?”

“She’ll be here next weekend and she definitely wants to meet you. Let’s see how it goes. I don’t want to take away from Peggy’s presentation,” he agreed.

“Absolutely,” she indicated. “Well, I know you need to go. Bon voyage! Remember, I will ask about your paper progress on Tuesday.”

“Right,” he concluded. “Au revoir!” He headed out the door, turning northeast toward the campus pond. As he did, he felt another twitch in his senses. His eyes glowed and he wheeled to his left.

“Not bad, Dave,” Nikki assessed with approval from atop the lamppost. “Dr. Kane wanted us to test you.”

From the darkness, a light dagger flew toward him.

He just managed to avoid it but blundered into the massed out mutant to his right.

“Careful , Dude,” Rick pointed out, grabbing for him.

Before he could do so, Dave disappeared in a puff of mist.

“Dammit!” Rick hissed.

“You had to open your big mouth,” the feral chastised.

“Lexa’s still invisible,” he disagreed.

At that moment, the light mutant reappeared while slumping to the ground. “He’s too sensitive!”

Nikki’s eyes glowed, tracking the area around them. “He’s gone again!”

From the darkness, two low level psychic pulses hit the two standing mutants.

Dave whistled from behind the oak tree while looking around to make sure they were indeed alone. “You really should pick a better place for a training exercise than this, guys. What if somebody sees us messing around?”

“It’s late,” Rick groused while rubbing his side.

“David’s right,” Adam agreed while hurrying toward them. “I wanted a test but not in the open like this! We were lucky.”

“Life has enough surprises, believe me.” The teen helped Lexa to her feet. “Anyhow, I need to get moving. Sorry but Karen’s waiting for me and I still need to pack.”

“Sure. We’ll talk on Tuesday in class. Good talk today,” Adam complimented.

“Thank you. Just finished presenting on Jeanne d’Arc for the French class. Sorry I can’t talk longer. I’ll see you all soon!” With that, he ran up the hill heading for the Northeast Quad.

“Let’s go,” Adam instructed the others. “I think we need to go over protocols again.”

The trio sighed, realizing what their impromptu exercise was about to cost them….

****

[Lewis Hall—Six minutes later]

As Dave rushed in the door, Garth checked his watch. “What was going on with Professor Desmoutiers?”

“She wanted to ask me how my paper was coming,” Dave explained while opening the closet and fishing through it for his duffel bag. “And Dr. Kane’s TAs put me through a pop quiz on the way home.”

“You mean the three mutants?” he asked low.

“Yeah.” Dave threw four changes of clothes and socks into the bag. Then he put his toiletry bag in with it. Finally, he set his index card boxes in there too before zipping it shut. “I’ll pop back this weekend to check on things. See ya.”

“Say hi to Karen and…you know, use protection,” his roommate indicated.

“Always do,” Dave agreed while opening up a portal and stepping into it.

While watching it disappear, Garth shook his head. I wish I could have that kind of luck…. With that, he headed down to see their classmates.

Chapter 4 [Louie’s Lower Level—University Student Union’s basement 8:00 PM Mountain Time]

Even as Dave was dealing with things up north, Karen and Tony sat in the middle of the bustling restaurant having a cup of coffee and talking about their math test not to mention their friend’s visit.

“Is he okay?” he asked while glancing at his watch.

“Madame Desmoutiers, his history prof., is talking with him.” Then she felt the “training exercise” but didn’t react. What’s going on with Dr. Kane’s team? That’s strange! “He should be here soon.” Then she smiled. “He’s here.”

Despite knowing the facts behind his friends’ link, he still arched his eyebrow curiously. That is so freaky!

At that moment, Dave came into the restaurant and plopped the bag next to them. “Sorry I’m late.”

“We’ll forgive you,” she indicated while kissing him. “How were your presentations?”

“Okay. I survived. That’s what matters,” he agreed while sliding into the seat. “Hope you have your glove ready. In between library visits, class appearances and time with Karen, we need to get some throwing in.”

“We can head over to the park on Saturday,” she agreed while sliding a cup over toward him. “And don’t forget we need to talk with Angie too.”

“I remember,” Dave concurred while taking a sip. “This hits the spot.” He smiled at them. “I’ve missed you both.”

“Glad to hear it, Chief,” she cracked, letting her eyes sparkle at him.

****

[Karen and Angie’s Room—twenty minutes later]

After dropping his bag off in Tony’s room, Dave followed Karen into her room and shut the door behind them. “This looks a little livelier than the last time.”

“We’ve tried to give this place a little zip,” she indicated while putting the blinds down. “Now then, where were we?”

He embraced her; looking deeply into her eyes. “I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter though.” He kissed her deeply, feeling the energy flowing between them. “Much better.”

“Glad you think so.” She rubbed up against him. “Too bad we don’t know when Angie will be back.”

“We could go somewhere where we won’t be disturbed,” he suggested.

She shook her head. “I wish we could but I do have class in the morning.”

At that moment, Angie shuffled into the room, slinging her bag onto the desk and flopping on the bed. Without looking, she sighed, “Hi. Interesting day.”

The couple looked bemusedly at each other and then at her.

“Want to swap war stories?” he supposed with a straight face.

Angie’s eyes snapped open and she stared at him. “Dave? Didn’t you have class tonight?”

He glanced at his watch and then at her. “I finished my last oral report about an hour and a half ago. Pauline gave me a lift right after that.”

“Last report?” Angie asked incredulously.

“I had two presentations today for Drs. Kane and Desmoutiers.” He yawned. “I’d better be going to Tony’s room. See you both in the morning.”

“Meet us out front about 7:45,” Karen suggested as she led him out of the room.

After they had left, Angie shook her head. Maybe I should have let Mike come up here. Even if she doesn’t like him, since Dave’s here, why can’t we be here too?

Chapter 5 [Next Morning]

Dave showered and returned to the room where Tony waited for him. “Morning.”

“Hey, Dave. You sleep okay?” the catcher inquired while biting into a pop tart.

“I was fine. Thanks for letting me sack out here this weekend. I appreciate it,” the guest expressed while stepping into the closet and dressing in a blue button down shirt and beige slacks.

Tony shook his head but smirked at him. “You’re going to stick out like a sore thumb, Dave.” He grabbed his backpack. “Let’s not keep your girlfriend waiting.”

“Like I’d want to do that,” Dave cracked as they left and headed out the front door to find her and Angie waiting. “Good morning, Ladies.”

“Morning, Dave.” Karen kissed him on the cheek.

Noting Angie’s silence, he glanced at his girlfriend and then at Tony.

“I’ll save us some seats. See you there.” Not wanting to get between this mood-fest, Tony left for Social Sciences on that note.

“So what do we want for breakfast?” Angie queried.

“The upstairs restaurant makes great waffles, Dave. I know that’s what you want,” Karen queried.

Once again, he took stock of Angie’s moodiness. [“What’s with her?”]

Karen eyed her roommate. [“She’s been like that for the last couple of weeks. That’s why I wanted you here when we talked.”]

[“I see what you mean. As long as she doesn’t think we’re ganging up on her,”] he agreed as they headed for the Union.

[After World History class]

Dave paid close attention to Dr. Coltrane’s lecture on the ancient Greeks, noting every detail with great interest. He could see why Karen liked this instructor. She really knows her stuff and she’s enthusiastic.

“See what I mean?” his girlfriend asked.

“Yeah. I could see her in an upper division class,” he concurred.

“Dave, mind if I introduce you?” Angie interjected, managing a smile.

“Sure,” he agreed, feeling relieved to see her smile. He followed her down to the front of the room.

The professor smiled at them. “Angela, hello. Did you have a question?”

Angie blushed shyly. “I’d like to introduce a friend of mine. Dr. Coltrane, this is David Dubois. Dave, this is Dr. Coltrane.”

“Dr. Coltrane, it’s a pleasure,” he told her as they shook hands.

“Likewise,” she agreed. “Are you visiting?”

“I’m here to visit Karen and Angie for the weekend from Massachusetts. I’m going to U-Mass,” he explained. “Karen and I have been dating for about two years now.”

“That’s nice although it must have been tough for you to get away from all of the foliage,” Dr. Coltrane noted.

“Yes but I wanted to come out here, see the facilities and catch up with my friends and girlfriend,” he continued cheerfully. “I’m going to hit the library while Angie and Karen are finishing their classes. Work before play, right?”

“Dave’s the person I quoted on the first day,” Angie declared.

“Really?” The older woman looked him over with interest. “That is some definition of history you have, David. I’m sorry I don’t have more time to talk with you this weekend. Have Karen let me know when your next trip is and I’ll set up some time if that’s all right with you.”

“It’s great. Thanks,” he concurred. “Nice meeting you, Dr. Coltrane.”

“And you,” the professor replied. After he and Angie met Karen in the back, she watched as he took the latter girl’s hand and headed out. Nice young man. I really must find to talk to him some more!

****

[University Library—3:00 PM]

After a filling but not very satisfying lunch, Dave sat in the library, trying to focus on a copy of Recueils de Bourgogne for the dreaded paper next week. As he read the text, he noted how Denis’ description of Dijon and his tactics mirrored those of the Enforcers from a year earlier particularly the stalking and the sneak attack tendencies. We might have a vampire copycat. Great. A killer needs a hero and the Butcher gets the nod. At least he didn’t pick Bluebeard. That thought made him roll his eyes.

But there was more bugging him than just that. After his discussion with Karen last week about Angie, he had decided to observe the latter before making up his own mind. What he saw confirmed his girlfriend’s observation: that something was bothering Angie. Maybe if we talked about it.

Recueils de Bourgogne? That’s some weekend reading, David.”

He looked up to see Dr. Coltrane observing him. “Dr. Coltrane. Excuse me, sorry I didn’t see you.”

“You’re obviously engrossed in that. You read Medieval French?” she inquired.

“It’s slow going but I have a paper next week for French History back at U-Mass. No peace for the wicked, you know,” he explained. “Take a seat if you have a minute?”

“I was going to get a coffee if you’d like to join me?” she invited. Glancing at the book, she added, “I can check that out for you.”

“Thanks. I could use a coffee myself,” he agreed while packing up his notes and following her toward the stairs.

[Coffee shop—Top floor of the Student Union]

Dr. Coltrane bought them each a cup of the Columbian Premium. “Here you go. Fix it how you like.”

“Thank you,” he expressed while putting in some milk and a couple of diet sweeteners. “That was some lecture this morning. I really enjoyed it.”

She looked at him quizzically. “Just curious, what year are you?”

“I’m a first semester freshman. I just have a big head start.” He took another drink.

She took a deep breath. “Sorry. You’re definitely not the average freshman, David. I think it’s great that you’re so interested in history.”

Pray you never find out why. He sipped thoughtfully at his cup. “We learn from the past, Dr. Coltrane.”

Another non-freshman point. What’s going on with him? “Indeed,” she agreed. “You have a particular interest?”

“Europe and America at this point. The Middle East is still out there,” he noted. “It livened up winter days in western Mass.”

“Western Mass,” she repeated his words. “That’s right.”

Now it was his turn to access her. What is she getting at? He felt his head going numb. “Karen and I graduated together from Amherst High.”

“And Angie? How did you meet?”

He smiled. “I took my grandmother to a county fair in upstate New York. Angie was horse back riding up there. Small town fairs are the best especially with all of the color.”

“My parents used to take me to them too.” She shrugged. “I’m from Braintree originally.”

“Ah,” he realized. “And what’s your research field?”

Third non-freshman question. “Early modern Middle Eastern history.” She took a sip from her cup and considered a way to break the stalemate. “I was wondering if you could answer something about Angela for me?”

“If I can,” he concurred guardedly.

“From what my TA says, she’s really shy and insecure. Any idea why?”

He sighed, “Her classmates didn’t treat her well back in Wabash from what I saw. Karen mentioned to me that something happened on the first day of class.”

She nodded. “I had to stop some of the other students from laughing at her.” She went white. “Are you saying?”

He frowned. “Par for the course where she’s concerned. Speaking as her friend, I wanted to thank you for that. Now if I can figure out what’s going on with her?”

“I’ve seen her walking around campus with a tall Latino guy. Maybe you might ask him?” she offered. Looking at her watch, she excused herself. “Sorry. I need to get ready for a meeting. It was nice meeting you, David. Can you make sure that book gets back to the library? We should do this again.”

“Absolutely,” he agreed as they shook hands. I need to ask Karen about this Latino student. As he turned to leave, he saw Pauline waving at him and sitting with a dark haired bearded man with glasses. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to say hello to some friends. Thanks.”

She watched him walk over toward the table. His first day in town and he knows Tony Samuelsohn and his wife? Strange. She left, trying to figure him out.

While talking with her husband, Pauline had observed Dave speaking with her husband’s colleague. He’s being careful at least. I’ll need to keep my eye on that woman however.

“What’s wrong?” Tony asked.

“Nothing important,” she replied half-truthfully while waving to Dave. “There’s someone you need to meet.”

“Pauline?” Dave queried in confusion while setting the tome and his note cards down. “Sorry but…”

She responded almost playfully, “Caught you off guard, did I? Always expect the unexpected. You should know that by now. By the way, this is my husband, Dr. Tony Samuelsohn. Tony, David Dubois from Amherst, Massachusetts.”

“I’ve heard a great deal about you,” Dr. Samuelsohn indicated while shaking his hand. As they did so, he glimpsed at the scar. “It’s true then.”

Dave looked warily at them, sizing up the man in front of him and not saying anything.

“Tony, this isn’t the place,” she admonished while looking around. Fortunately, the coffee shop was fairly empty.

The older man bristled but didn’t say anything more on the topic.

She composed herself. “I understand you gave quite the presentation last night, David. I spoke to Ms. diCosta later.”

“Glad she liked it,” Dave agreed. “Big one coming up in December though.”

She nodded. “Indeed.” She added to her husband. “The Vendee and its role in New France.”

He exchanged pointed glances with her and then with the teenager, filing his remarks for later.

“Madame Desmoutiers wants the full account. Another professor is coming from Canada to help me present.”

“And I will be there as well,” she indicated.

Wanting to change the subject, Dave queried, “Dr. Samuelsohn, what do you teach?”

“European archaeology and linguistics. Late medieval period,” he answered. “Perhaps you might sit on a class during one of your visits?”

“Sure,” Dave agreed tentatively. What’s his deal? Then again, what’s going on between them? “I’ve been doing my exercises too, Pauline.”

“I noticed. You handled that impromptu exercise very well,” she complimented while glancing at her watch. “I think the girls are getting out of class. Perhaps you might want to meet them?”

“Geez!” He realized while standing up. “They’ll be looking for me at the library!”

“Calm yourself. You still have fifteen minutes,” she assured him, trying to prevent a lapse on his part.

“Right.” He took a deep soothing breath. “Thanks. See you soon. Good to meet you, Dr. Samuelsohn.” With that, Dave headed out.

“He’s about what I expected,” Tony assessed.

She shrugged. “Don’t assume you’ve seen everything about him from that interaction. Come.” With that, she led them from the area toward a secluded place. Making sure nobody was around them, she teleported them away from the scene.

Chapter 6 [University Library—Ten minutes later]

Dave sat on the concrete bench in front of the doors waiting for Karen and Angie to walk over from their classes. The meetings with Drs. Coltrane and Samuelsohn had given him a great deal to mull over in his head. People certainly are too interested for their own good. He cracked open Receuils again and started skimming another section.

As he did so, a tall Latino male sat down on the other side of the bench and looked him over.

Dave took note of this activity but said nothing. Speaking of which….

“With that thing, you’ve got to be Karen’s boyfriend,” the other assumed.

“It’s for a paper I’m writing,” Dave countered flatly. “Mike, I presume?”

“That’s right. Mike Montoya. Down here checking things out?”

Dave rolled his eyes, feeling his scalp going numb. “I’m here visiting my girlfriend and trying to get some work done in the process. And no, I don’t need to snoop around because I trust Karen. ¿Comprendes?”

“Right.” Montoya sniggered. “Man, she is so fine....”

Dave slammed the book shut and glared at the other student. “Stay away from her. While you’re at it, what’s going on between you and Angie anyhow?”

“Her? She’s tutoring me for classes. I let her hang out with me,” the other retorted almost too casually. He shook his head. “Her parents and that stupid minister sent you, didn’t they? Damn!”

Dave shook his head, knowing that Mike was itching for a fight. “Actually they didn’t but they are concerned about her. Maybe you could remind her about that every once in a while?”

The other snorted. “Her parents smother her as it is. Why would I?”

Oh boy. “Because it’s the right thing to do or maybe as a favor? Look, Mike, I’m glad you’re giving her somebody to hang out with. Really. All I’m asking is for you to ask how her folks are doing once in a while,” Dave explained.

“And now you’re telling me how to run a relationship?” Mike shoved him, knocking his note cards all over the place. “Mind your own business, Hombre!”

“Pick those up,” Dave instructed.

“Or what?”

“You really don’t want to piss me off, Montoya. Pick them up ahora.”

Mike kept going. “From what they say about you, you think you’re hot stuff up there, Dubois. Down here, you’re nothing. Pick your own cards up.”

Dave glanced at the others’ bag and telekinetically tipped it over, spilling the books inside. “Wind’s a bitch, ain’t it?” He picked up his cards and put them in the box.

“What’s going on?” Karen asked as she and Tony Waterston rushed over.

“Your boyfriend and I were talking about things. Such as you both staying out of my relationship with Angie,” Mike growled.

“Dream on, Burrito Brain,” Dave countered while shooting the other a dark glare.

“Dave, come on,” Tony instructed. “The park, remember?”

“He’s not worth it anyhow,” Dave dismissed. “Let’s get back to the dorm.”

“I’ll catch up,” she noted. After they left, she demanded, “Why did you pick that argument with him?”

“Your boyfriend should mind his own business. So should you,” he retorted.

“Angie’s my roommate. That makes it our business! Look, Mike, Tony and I overheard the last part of your conversation with Dave. All he asked was for you to ask one question. Just one. Think on that!” she snapped before storming away.

Montoya shook his head and stalked off in the other direction, determining to take advantage of Angie…and setting the stage for more trouble later.

Chapter 7 [Karen and Angie’s Dorm Room—that night]

After blowing off some steam pitching to Tony at the park and having a good dinner, Dave accompanied Karen back to her room. Even with her assurances, he was still pretty stirred up by his run in with Angie’s friend/ ‘study buddy’.

“Sorry about the scene,” he apologized (yet again).

“I’m glad we got there when we did,” she noted. “Dave, you handled yourself well out there. At least you didn’t go off. Take a seat and relax.” She rubbed his back. “Geez, you’re tense!”

“That feels good,” he told her, feeling himself calming down. “Thanks, Sweetheart.”

“You’re quite welcome, sir,” she assured him while kissing him on the cheek. “Maybe we should head for your dorm. You need a session badly.”

“No argument here. We still need to talk with Angie though,” he pointed out.

“That can wait. At least, we should catch our br….” She heard the key rattling in the lock.

Angie stormed into the room, slamming the door behind her. “What did you do, Dave?”

He stared at this uncharacteristic display. “Excuse me?”

“Mike said you harassed him in front of the library! How can you do this? I finally find someone to hang out with and you try to beat him up!” Angie accused; her eyes watering.

He snickered incredulously; his head started to go numb. “You’ve got it in reverse. I was waiting for Karen and Tony. He sat down and started harassing me. He shoved me, knocking my stuff all over the place. I never laid a hand on him! You’d best be careful, Angie. He’s using you.”

Angie shook her head. “I can’t believe you! Dave, of everyone, I’d thought you be happy that I have a friend like Mike! He thinks I’m pretty and smart.”

“You want to know what got me mad, Ladies?” He ran his hand through his hair and glanced anxiously at his girlfriend.

Karen knew that look. “I better sit down.”

“You’re digging yourself deeper, Dave. I’d stop now,” Angie advised pointedly.

“Hate to tell you but he’s looking at Karen, Angie. I told him to stay away from her,” he reported. “Look, Karen, I know you can fight your own battles but you’re not a piece of meat. I won’t have anyone talking about you like that.”

“I know and I appreciate that, Dave,” Karen expressed supportively. “Angie, I actually did ask Dave down so that we could talk together about this situation.”

“If you want to talk, aren’t you willing to hear my side? Or Mike’s? It seems like you two already have your minds made up! You know Mike’s volunteered to fly home with me next week to meet my folks? If he were such a creep, why would he do that?” Angie argued furiously.

“Look, Angie. We just don’t want you to get hurt again. All right?” he assured her. “I can’t tell you who to hang out with or what you two do, etc. Just have your eyes open and your wits about you. Okay?”

“Whatever.” Angie grabbed her purse and frowned at them. “You owe him an apology.”

He shook his head. “Angie, tell him that he owes me an apology for being a world class jerk. I didn’t do anything to him other than telling him to respect Karen. That’s it.”

“OOH!” Angie stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

Karen grimaced. “That went really well.”

“Tell me about it,” he agreed while considering his workload for that evening. “I guess a movie’s out, isn’t it?”

“Dave, stop it. Okay? Beating yourself up for what happened isn’t going to solve anything.” She shut the door and sat beside him on the bed. “You know what we need, right?”

He looked at her warmly and smiled. “Absolutely.”

She opened her purse and produced the familiar package and her pills. “I come prepared.”

He eased her onto the bed and turned out the lights.

[An hour later]

She cuddled up against him, stirring him from bliss. “Dave, I’ve missed this.”

“You know it,” he agreed while turning on the lights. “What if she comes back? That’s all we need.”

“So what? She can deal with it,” she admonished. “Knowing that creep, he’s sizing her up for his bed.”

He squeezed his eyes shut. He could imagine such a scene and how devastated their friend would be after that. “Her Dad would come down here with a shotgun.” He sighed. “I’m glad I’m not going to be on the farm next weekend. Can you imagine her folks and Brother Tony with Montoya?”

“That’s a train wreck waiting to happen,” she concurred while getting up and slipping on her bathrobe.

“It might be fun watching the good Brother light into him though,” he deduced.

“You’re sadistic.” She giggled. “And I’d like to see that too.”

He slipped the evidence of their tryst into a plastic sandwich baggie and tied it shut. “I’ll get rid of this.” Then he got up and dressed himself. “Tell you what. Why don’t we drop in on the good Brother?”

“Now? Dave, it’s 8:00 back there!” she protested.

“So? He’s up. Trust me; he’s not on a curfew where Angie’s concerned. I’m going to shower and get some other clothes. I’ll be back in twenty minutes.” He opened a portal and disappeared into it.

This is going to be REALLY interesting. So much for a peaceful weekend! Somehow, the midterms don’t seem so daunting now. She made a quick call before heading for the shower.

Chapter 8 [Wabash Congregational Church—8:30 PM Eastern]

Brother Tony sat in the front pew and checked his watch once more. Why would they come up here now? Is everything all right? Despite his promise to his young friends, he had almost called Bill and Jennifer about this impromptu meeting. Then he saw the mists form before Dave and Karen stepped into the church. “Good evening. What is it?”

“Hi, Brother Tony,” she greeted. “Sorry to disturb you so late.”

“Nonsense, my friends. Please take a seat. I have coffee brewing if you’d like some,” the minister offered.

“That would be great. Thank you,” Dave expressed while slumping into a pew.

Brother Tony considered their glumness before adding, “Just give me a minute. Then you both tell me the whole story.” He disappeared toward the kitchen before returning with a small cart bearing a coffee pot and some cider donuts. “After you called, I went to the café.” He sat next to them. “Now tell me what’s troubling you, my friends.”

[25 minutes later]

For the next bit of time, the two teens related the events of that day (with Karen adding details over the semester). With no holds barred, their concern came through loud and clear.

As he always did, the older man listened carefully, noting each word and inference in addition to the speakers themselves. While he knew that Angie was of age, he also worried about her. I should tell Bill and Jennifer but I did swear my confidence. When they had stopped talking, he took a deep breath. “I see.”

“I feel like a sneak doing this,” Dave pointed out.

“No, David, you’re being a good friend. Karen has been keeping me in the loop as you might say all along,” he indicated. “Angela is a sweet girl but she’s still very naïve. I was worried something like this might happen. I will need to speak to her parents about this matter.”

“As long as they don’t know we’re here,” she agreed conditionally.

“Sorry, Brother. I’d love nothing more than to speak with them in person but Pauline’s asked me not to go spreading our transportation to everyone,” Dave apologized while drinking a cup of coffee.

“I can see why. Well, Angela’s bringing Mr. Montoya here next weekend to visit and see the foliage. I will definitely make sure he behaves himself.” The minister smiled coolly. “If not, you’re right down the road, David. I may call for back up.”

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that,” Dave sighed while scribbling the dorm and home numbers on a piece of paper. “Here’s my number at the university. Karen’s flying back here to spend the weekend with us. I just hope Mike doesn’t try to bully her parents.”

Brother Tony chuckled. “Don’t worry about Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell. They’re made of stern stuff. Besides, I have a sermon in mind for next Sunday just for the occasion.” He considered them again. “I must compliment you, David.”

“On what?”

“For not releasing the darkness. As with the bully at the high school, you’re standing your ground in a good way,” the minister declared.

“One day, you have to give me the whole story on that,” she replied, eyeing her boyfriend.

“Perhaps. If you will excuse me, I would like to speak with the Blackwells tonight on this matter,” Brother Tony noted.

“Just as long as they don’t start a witch hunt,” she insisted.

“No. People like this young man hang themselves, Karen. Go in peace, my friends,” the minister assured them. After the duo disappeared again, he scratched his head. I still can’t believe how they do that. Amazing! With that, he went for his coat and started toward the door.
