As the Talon Turns

Compatible Ships

Even as they have eyes for each other, Clark and Lana interact with other couples and their friends.  Whether at home, at school, or savoring the wondrous java at the Talon, they talk with those around them.  Here's my rundown on which ships can fit in on the Clana marina on romantic and friendly levels.

Romantic Ships

Martha/Jonathan:  As parents, Martha and Jonathan seem the ideal ("Rockwellian") types.  They run the family farm, make sure that everything is all right where Clark is concerned, and serve as the latter's pillars of security.  Of course, they are very protective of their son--almost to the point of being extreme.  This overprotectiveness has and will continue to hamper any relationship for Clark.  Sooner or later, they will need to trust Lana as they have Pete.

Chlex (Chloe/Lex):  Can you say 'Verbal Judo'?  Although the show's writers will never admit it, these two Type-A personalities never take prisoners and dominate the scene around them...that is--until they ran into each other in the world of fanfic.  Together, they compliment each other, feeding off of each other's ideas, creativity, enthusiasm, and energy.  With Clana, they form the Fearsome Foursome with whom few high school cliques can compete.

Pete/Erika-Latest Girl of the Week:  Repeat after me: Pete needs a girlfriend.  Pete needs a girlfriend.  Seriously, he is Clark's best or second best friend (depending upon where you place Lex in the equation) and needs to find someone so he's not such an outsider.

Nell/Dean:  Keep them in Metropolis and everything will be okay.  Enough said.

Friendly Ships

Clex (Clark-Lex):  These two have forged a close relationship since the infamous bridge incident in the Pilot much to the chagrin of Jonathan and Pete among others.  Although, the writers seem ready to start pushing them apart, they are like brothers. (Sorry, guys--no slash here)

Chlark (Clark-Chloe):  Yes, Chlarkers--there is room for you too in this picture--just on a friendly level.  The two reporters share several common interests and remain close friends.  He admires her drive and stick-to-it attitude.  She likes his looks, character, and country charm.  Together, they move mountains on The Torch.

Clete (Clark-Pete):  Before Lex, they were best friends.  They still remain close friends and like brothers.  Since Pete knows who and what Clark really is, this relationship remains vital.

Lexana (Lana-Lex):  The business relationship behind the Talon's reemergence.  These two friends are effective business partners.  He stays in the background, wandering in to keep an eye on things and providing the financing for operations.  She is the face people associate with Smallville's caffeine center, making sure that everything goes right in the cafe.  Despite the issues that they have faced (Nicodemus, Desiree, Clark's heat vision), their partnership remains strong until the end of Season 3 when Lana heads for Paris.  In Season 4, Lex still making push, culminating in "Commencement" when he makes a real play for her and she realizes his self-interest.

Chlana (Chloe-Lana):  These two are becoming closer now that the relationships are set.  On the show, the housemates are busy outvoting Gabe in the Sullivan household and becoming like sisters.  In addition to the occasional shared project on The Torch, the two also talk about a lot of things.  One word of warning though: unless with Clark and Lex, they shouldn't try to double date. (Sorry, guys--no slash here)

Chlete (Chloe-Pete): Depending upon whether you are a Chlexer or not, this relationship will vary according to level.  In either case, these long time friends remain close, working on several projects for The Torch together and sharing small talk.  Word of advice: They should avoid trying to jump ravines in Pete's sports car of the week.  (With Pete a non-player, this isn't an issue anymore.)

Lanete (Lana-Pete): They share several mutual friends and when it comes to Clark, she will turn to him for advice in some instances.  Not all that close in this version of Smallville.
